ECU Tune and Failed Emissions Testing Experience

Flashing back to stock with the files dated on/after 9/27/2023 will allow you to return to OEM CVN. So yes in that case.

It wouldn't matter when your tune was made/flashed.

If anyone needs Virginia, or remote-based help who is not near a tuning resource, that is in need of a revert to a stock file at please let me know. Even if you are a customer of a competitive tuning offering besides KDMAX Pro we all use the same great VFTuner platform and stock files which have been updated properly to address this issue. The sum does not equal the tuning improvements thousands and thousands of Tacoma owners have come to know, but you are right it's PNP. Counterpoint, I even sell the tunes bundled with the cables for owners for $750 and they can apply any custom file right at home. What's a Pedal Commander and SSP run these days? I mean of the pricing is close I'd rather get the tune and cable setup for the best possible outcome for every mile AND have what I need on hand for upgrades, reverts to stock (even if needed), or applying adjustment files as I build.

 

Is it idiot proof to apply the tunes if I get one of the bundles? What else do I need. An instructional video would be awesome. Might get it maybe next year as I’m due for smog in 2025 sept.

I feel the process is solid for the third gen. Tacomas... I wouldn't tune in person to remotely if that wasn't the case. I've also got your back. If anything were to crop up, that's what good business is. I provide full instructions but I also can be on the phone and even remote in to the tuning laptop to perform all the steps. That said, I like the idea of a video guide so maybe I'll make that my New Year's plan...

I live in Colorado and I passed emissions this year but it was due to the roadside testing. I have the kdmax tune now but was thinking about stepping up to the OTT tune. I guess I need to get a spare ecu in case I have to actually go in to get emissions done. Thanks for figuring this out.

 

Hey AJ, if you're not on KDMAX Pro v10 lets get you upgraded! Why do you need a new ECU? Cheaper to buy/borrow a VFTuner cable to revert you to the stock file then back to your custom tune after. If you need help please let me know!

 

I'm not sure what version I'm on now it's been a couple of years since I had it done. I thought about getting a cable and just doing it myself but I don't have my stock files. Maybe I will look into getting a cable.

 

If flashing the existing ECU back to stock tune gives a CVN that makes the smog tester happy, it's going to probably save considerable time & trouble.

If you swap ECUs you will have to not only physically unbolt stuff & remove connectors/harnesses, but also go through the immobilizer-reset process, twice.

What if your tuner has gone silent since March 2023? Anyone else support CVC tune? Which is probably a large portion of CA tunes (1000+).

By the way this whole deal got me looking at getting a new truck. $18k is the going offer for a 17' clean sport w 91k miles. Not great when new trucks cost $50k plus. What a screw over.

My 17 Offroad with 73k miles bluebooks at like $29k...last I saw a week or so ago.
