Hi all, has anyone tried using an Edmunds price guarantee certificate to buy a car and got denied? I got one for a Taco that sounds too good to be true and wondering what recourse, if any, I have if they deny it.

I have emailed 3 different people at the dealer and not one would get back to me. Dealer is a 7 hour drive from my home.

What is their guarantee based on?

Unless they have a business relationship with Toyota, dealers have no reason to pay any attention to Edmunds.

I guess I should have added Edmunds response:

Thank you for reaching out to Edmunds!

Dealerships partner with Edmunds to list discounted inventory on our site. Because all discounts are set by the dealership directly, they are expected to honor the prices on the certificates. We highly recommend calling ahead to verify pricing and to ensure that the vehicle is still in stock, as another user could retrieve the same certificate.

I hope this makes sense. Please feel free to reach out with any further questions, and have a nice evening!

    Kind Regards,

"Expected to honor" doesn't sound like a guarantee to me, just sounds like something to get you in through the door of the dealership

OP - does the certificate cost anything? The reason I ask is that for there to be a recourse, you have to be "made whole", as in if you paid money and want it back.

Dealers do "ad cars" all the time with the purpose to lure customers to their dealership. They make these cars very difficult to get because they want to upsell you on a more expensive car.

Go to the dealership website to look up the car. In many states they are required to post the Carfax. I've seen newer model year cars with only "1 owner" but it had been bought and sold at auction through three dealers. That's a car to avoid.

It would indeed suck to drive 7 hours to a dealership only to find out the car you want is sold already. Many times they will hold a car for you for a fee.

Can you call the Dealer to verify the price before you drive there?

I did. A few times. Each time, they want to ask their manager. Each time, they tell me they'll call me back. Then **crickets**
    I hate dealerships.

I've used it before but confirmed with the dealership twice before heading out.

If it's a long drive like that, give them a deposit so they can't recant. They could say that particular one was sold then it's a crappy day.

If they cannot verify the price then I don't think I would drive 7 hours, they sound shady.
