Two different times, I've been driving thru a chain up area and been asked by CHP or NPS Rangers
    1. Do you have 4WD? (Yes)
    2. Are you IN 4WD? (Yes)
    3. Do you have chains with you? (Yes. But neither asked to see them)

Where do you want to use them and how?

Edit - the reason I ask is there is a $ difference between needing a set to get in and out of a mountain cabin all winter in deep snow and mud or just needing to have them in case of emergency for the annual trip to Big Bear.

    Only do the backs.
    Unless in extreme cases.
With the 4x4 and snow tires and calm and cool you will be fine!

He ment do not buy metal chain ones. Not rubber.
Google image rubber tire chains, metal tire chains, etc.
Buy cable type like you would see as a on a bridge or something. A tightly wound metal cable.

My chains are 20 years old or so but they are similar to glacier chains v-bar twist link

I live and work in Yosemite. I have Peerless Z cables and love them. If conditions are right, Rangers will make you apply them do be sure to have something.
There are places just outside Yose (Mariposa) that rent them.

Do not get the socks whatever you do. They are useless.

I see a lot of 4x4 and 4WD in ditches because of that. Gravity always wins.
The key word on the 1st line was Snow Tires.

Flat road is a whole lot different than a mountain road.

And, cables have their place. But, not the same as chains. Check your clearance.

Im not sure what they mean for tractor. But I would imagine it has something to do with the tread spacing.
No I would not use those.
I am not 100% whether or not you cannot use those.
