Really contemplating getting the Alucab Canopy system on my 5’ bed 2wd truck. I finally got to see one up close and have them open it up and let me check it out and I was very impressed with the build quality.
My only question is how much does this effect the MPG on a daily driver?
My truck is completely stock and I daily drive now with a LEER 100XL topper on it 24/7 and noticed barely any MPG decrease with the added weight. I’m sure I would add some kind of leaf spring pack to compensate for the extra weight of the Alucab Canopy system but would run daily with it empty besides the mattress and bug screen which aren’t any added weight basically.
Anyone have a rough estimate for MPG effect on stock truck with stock tire size and no added aftermarket weight.
    Thanks

my neighbor put a shell on his 3rd gen, i helped him install it. not your brand but very similar to the size and shape of what you are considering. about a month later i noticed it was not on there anymore, he sold it, said it was too hot for his dog and he lost 4MPG.

Typically with any vehicle, you will lose 1 mpg for every 40 lbs you add to it.

    Oh look, another mod....
That means if I have a 280lb chick riding with me, I'll lose 7MPG!

I am borderline obsessive about hand calculating MPG and I did not notice any reduction after adding a ~200 lb shell on my long bed. Any reduction is likely to be < 1 MPG for a cab-high shell unless it has bad aerodynamics. Also, running a cap will net you better MPG than running an empty bed without any cover.

That I agree with, I have owned many trucks and had a shell and carpet kit in most of them. I got better mpg than with out shell and added weight.
What I am stating is just a mathematical calculation. Like, a vehicle just idling will burn through 1/2 gallon of gas per hour.
It doesn't fit for every vehicle, more of just mark to go by. Kind of like distance to empty in our truck... it varies by application.

There is a lot of wrong in your post man.
Adding ANY weight will decrease your efficiency. Also, it has been tested and proven that an empty bed with no cover is actually a wash to a cover.
    Maybe your math is wrong?

Drive the same 21 miles back and forth to work everyday in many conditions usually cruise controlled at the same speed without traffic at 4:30am. Before the topper I averaged 20.9mpg, after the topper I’m averaging 20.2mpg and this is after many tanks of gas before and after. Also have ECT permanently on at all times, the mpg decrease was basically negligible. Was the same on my last truck also with a topper, I feel like most people notice the most decreases because they put a topper on and then add the wheels and armor and weight on top of weight and wonder why they’re only getting 12-13 mpg.
