I have an 06 Tacoma and started having issues a few months ago when the CHK ENGINE light came on. I have had this truck for 10 years and this is the first time it ever came on. Took it to Auto Zone and code read out EGR Vacuum Solenoid. The clerk told me that could be a bit of a problem to change as it was around the gas tank but he wouldn't do anything until it started acting up. He told me it would idle rough and run rough. Well it is sorta running rough but only at higher speeds, 40- up. The dash rattles and it feels like it is loosing power. Someone told me to try to clean out the intake so I tried Seafoam and it seemed to work for a month but now it has come back. I am looking for any help on this as I am taking a long trip next month and need this truck to be in top shape. I searched the site and did see a post about the EGR Valve Solenoid but it was vague and the video didn't look helpful as it wasn't an 06 Tacoma engine. So my questions are:
    1. Does this sound like an EGR problem?
    2. What are the steps to replacing EGR Valve?
    3. If not EGR, has anyone else run into similar issues?

Thank you for your time and I hope someone can help

Well for starters what was the CEL Code that you have?

It isn't the EGR Valve ( Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve ) as you don't have one.

Go somewhere else then...like JimmyH said we don't have EGR valves. Autozone gives you a code print out to take home with you...at least mine does.

Thank you for the response. I did get a printout but my lovely wife filed it you know where but I believe the code was either P0441 or P0446. I can't get it read again because the code cleared itself and hasn't come back on. EGR valve was what they said but after some research today and a stop at O'Reilly I was informed that we don't have that, we have a canister purge valve instead. I located that and will replace it but I am not convinced that this will fix it. Has any of you ever had any problems with the canister filter itself? I had it around 75 MPh today and the whole truck was vibrating. I let off gas for a second and it went away which makes me think I'm on the right track with emissions or intake.

P0441 Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow.

Purge VSV (Vacuum Switching Valve) stuck open:

Leak detection pump creates negative pressure (vacuum) in EVAP system and EVAP system pressure measured. 0.02 inch leak criterion measured at start and at end of leak check. If stabilized pressure higher than [second 0.02 inch leak criterion x 0.2], ECM determines that purge VSV stuck open.

    Trouble Areas:

    • Purge VSV
    • Connector/wire harness (Purge VSV - ECM)
    • ECM
    • Canister pump module
    • Leakage from EVAP system

    Purge VSV stuck closed:

After EVAP leak check performed, purge VSV turned ON (open), and atmospheric air introduced into EVAP system. 0.02 inch leak criterion measured at start and at end of the check. If pressure does not return to near atmospheric pressure, ECM determines that purge VSV stuck closed.

    Trouble Areas:

    • Purge VSV
    • Connector/wire harness (Purge VSV - ECM)
    • ECM
    • Canister pump module
    • Leakage from EVAP system

    Purge flow:

While engine running, following conditions successively met: • Negative pressure not created in EVAP system when purge VSV turned ON (open) • EVAP system pressure change less than 0.5 kPa (3.75 mmHg) when vent valve turned ON (closed) • Atmospheric pressure change before and after purge flow monitor less than 0.1 kPa (0.75 mmHg)

    Trouble Areas:

    • Purge VSV
    • Connector/wire harness (Purge VSV - ECM)
    • Leakage from EVAP line (Purge VSV - Intake manifold)
    • ECM

No point in guessing. Have the codes pulled again.

The CEL went off and hasn't come back on. Went to O'Reilly yesterday and nothing was showing up.

Like I said above if it doesn't come back don't worry. May have been just a slightly sticky valve.

The code hasn't come back on but that's the wierd thing. When code came on, truck was running fine. Code clears and now it's running rough. Had someone tell me today to try two different things. 1. Motor mounts and 2. Fan clutch might be stuck on.

I really appreciate the help guys.

Disconnect the Battery for 10 minutes, then reconnect and reset all learned data.

Then start it up and drive it for a bit ( it will probably start rough the first time ).

Update----- Good news!! It is fixed but had nothing to with the code. Jimmy, I did the battery thing and after almost 1k miles nothing came on so I started looking deeper and the fix probably belongs in another thread. It was the U-Joints and the center hanger bearing. The whole truck was shaking when I accelerated and there was a constant vibration while on CC at 75 but as soon as I let off, it went away. The video link below was very helpful. Thank you guys for all the help, kinda sucks I was chasing a phantom code all this time.
