Deckplate mod, black KC slimlight fogs, hurculined bed, NRA sticker mod, painted rear chrome bumper black, black fender flares and front grill surround, HIDs, All-pro rear leafs and UCAs, Eibach coilovers, billys all around, flat black pro comps, 31x10.5x15 BFG KM2s
yeah i did the deckplate when i first got my truck and thought it was great but now i mostly leave it in because it feels, to me, like more low end and torque

i think the great thing about the deckplate is it is completely reversible and its all about options

on another note i put k&n filters on all my vehicles and truly believe that it does help in a small way and its cleanable and reusable

but im thinking about getting a AFE pro dry filter soon to skip the oiling process

either way get a good filter to improve flow

    and filtration

One thing I find funny is thought alot of you guys don't realize that when those dyno runs where done comparing the elbow and with the deckplate, they where done using a K&N drop-in filter. So if you do one of these two mods, and retain your OEM Toyota filter which is much more restrictive than the K&N, you will not be getting the absolute best results. I'd be interested to see what kind of results come using a stock Toyota air filter, to say that the deckplate mod takes ALL the credit is just not accurate. The K&N drop-in had a factor in that increase as well.

I didn't read the whole thread but 'm pretty sure I'm the only one here who did an elbow mod. I like the results. It didn't turn my truck into a rocket but it did improve light throttle input response, and opened it up a little more at WOT. I am getting fresh outside air from inside the fender fed by the gap between the bumper and nose. No engine heat gets near it. I understand the deckplate mod will likely give a better force of air coming in from the grill to headlight area, but I am very content with what I have. Plus you'd never know I have a mod on a visual inspection, just in case that ever mattered someday.

I drove for a couple of days with the "elbow mod" and made the following observations.

The biggest and foremost thing out of it was that it lost a good 2-3 mpg's by doing so. The loss in mpg's was very very noticable. It was ridiculous. Sure, the computer might have "adjusted" itself a little over time if you believe in that kind of thing, but I don't think it would have brought it back up to how it was before. It was simply too big of a drop.

Secondly, the engine braking pretty much went completely away which I did not like.

Third, it dropped a bit of power in the low end. Up higher in the rev range however it seemed to maybe breath a little better. That was the only positive out of it.

I put that thing back in faster than a kid runs to a candy shop and never removing it again, or, plan to do the deckplate mod for that matter which I've heard completely 100% mixed reviews on at every end of the spectrum. Now I know why everybody hates those CAI's.

Moral of the story is, the manufacture designed the intake a certain way and that way yields best results for a stock application. Period.

I didn't lose mileage at all it stayed about the same. Too bad your results sucked. First time I heard of it. One thing I should say, I didn't like the elbow mod with the K+N dropin filter. It does better with the stock paper filter on my truck.

Yeah, I was surprised too at how negative the results were. I guess it just goes to show that every truck is a little different.

deckplate mod is pointless on a 4cyl.. dont bother.

Only the 3.4 V6 shows any improvement.

Buy an aftermarket intake system like AEM or Volant.

You really wont gain anything you can notice except a louder acceleration.

6" deckplate and an AFE Pro Dry-S filter is what i'm runnin and my MPG's and HP didnt really seem to change. what i did get was a little jumpier throttle which is nice when you wanna get that little pep in ya get and a SEXY ASS GROWL from under the hood when you get right in that 3-4k RPM range. the AFE is honestly where i feel like a lot of the performance came from as its construction compared to OEM filter is much more sturdy and air tight

I did the 4 inch deckplate. i feel it gave me a little throttle response. but i put it back on today cause i get on it too much to hear the sound it makes and im gettin terrible gas mileage and my A/T oil temp light came on and the truck shut off today after i got on it.

    LOL!

    Makes more noise.
    Slightly improved throttle response.

Blanket statements like this are almost always wrong. There are plenty of people who have tried the deckplate on a 2.7 and noticed results, myself included. No, I haven't run it on a dyno so I don't know what the actual change is, but there is one large hill on my way home from work which serves as my "butt dyno" test, with the deckplate out I can maintain speed in 5th. With the plate back in I need to drop down to 4th every time. If you have any other explanation for that besides the deckplate working I'd be interested to hear it.

As for the last post, just google "toyota deck plate mod" and you'll find plenty of write ups about it, basically you cut a big hole in your airbox and use silicone and screws to put in a boat deck plate, that way you can completely seal the hole if you want to and it doesn't permanently damage your airbox. The elbow mod means you remove the plastic elbow that enters the airbox, same basic idea as the deckplate.

i did the elbow removal and dropped in a spectre high air flow filter and called it a day. too lazy to do deckplate and no need to with the filter and elbow removed. did the intake silencer removal mod for shits and gigs too

^ this comment regarding the K&N drop-in element sucked me in...
because so many folk compare the drop-in to the fipk element

The K&N drop-in is a pos... and a poor choice IMO.
It does not compare to the element on the fipk,
and should no way be associated with the filtering capability
    of the fipk.

The K&N drop-in pleat holes are much larger and there are less of them.
The larger pleat holes, element oiled...
do not filter as well as the fipk's element with more holes (per sq/inch) that are smaller.

Not to mention... air flow on the drop-in is direct (straight thru)
The fipk element does not share the straight thru flow design.
And a over oiled drop-in tends to booger up the maf all to often.
Tho' over oiling the fipk element could still dirty the maf. (easy to clean).
But I have never had an over oiling issue in 13 years...
and my intake is as clean or better then when I used the oem fuzzy. ;)

Yeah... I have the fipk  (F U haters)
    it was cheaper 13 years ago ($ 120.00ish) ;)

But I also have my oem AB with the DP mod. (installed for special occasions)
I will never run another K&N drop in element...
instead... I'd rather use the stock fuzzy element with the oem AB

But I actually prefer my fipk...
and have saved a ton of money over the last 13 years
by not having to purchase a new element
...after nearly every weekend's worth of sucking up dirt.

Now for street geeks... doing standard maintenance/element replacement,
probably wouldn't save ya a whole lot, if ya don't get it dirty.

Doubt I'd spend the money on the current cost of the fipk...
and instead... would just do the DP mod to the stock AB

But I would never run a K&N drop-in element in the air box.
Anything else would do better... including the oem fuzzy.

I would choose a reusable/washable filter if possible.
because I would ruin a standard disposable filter in a weekend... if it's not

    for the OP...

just do the DP mod to the oem AB...
get a quality filter element (not K&N)
and call it a day. muh $.02
