My heater starts heating in less than a minute after a cold srart. Some time ago, I read that there is an electric heating element somewhere in the system for cold starts when you want heat.

    Is this true?

I recall reading something about that too but don't remember if it activates everytime you turn the heat on or just on certain settings.

There is certainly an engine fed heater core because the fluid lines are there running into the cab from the front of the engine.

2 other people have heard this, as well. Is it something Sweers said?

If I am not mistaken someone posting a diagram that had a small electric heating element over towards the passenger side of the dash, again not sure what circumstances it comes on though.

    Yes.
Service manual calls it the "quick heater" or "PTC heater"; located behind dash on passenger side.

    -Engine running
    -Blower switch on
    -Temperature settings: MAX HOT
-Engine coolant temperature 65°C or lower
    -Ambient temperature 10°C or lower

Dammit! We might see 10 days a year, when it gets as cold as 61°F

    Supposedly all V6s have it.

Look for the PTC relay in the fuse panel under the hood.

My truck takes forever to heat up, faster than my 2nd gen tho. It reaches -30 here sometimes.

-30? Ouch! We moved from PA to WA 20yrs ago. I've acclimated to winter lows in the low +20s.

    Well ain't this sweet!

It takes a long time for the coolant to heat up and I never turn the fan on until it does so I don't blow cold air on myself. Here I've been freezing for 10 minutes without any need for it. I will test this out on my way home today!

Still! F and C are close enough that that temp to just be too damn cold.

I think it does work, I've tried with the auto setting on max heat when it's cold started like -15C and it slowly turns the fan on and blows warm air quicker to defrost the windshild. Doesn't make a ton of hot air to warm the cab but certainly defrosts quick.

Just wish tacomas had an option for the defrost elements under the wiper blades for those cold snowy days.
