We recently upgraded our main panel with new breakers and new “proper” wiring in schedule 40 all the way to the garage. Sub panel in the garage now too. Feel damn safe now as every time I welded in the garage, anyone near the main panel would hear strange noises coming from it. Shoot, it was probably arcing too.

I’d change it out to be on the safe side as was recommended.

As a follow up- I was doing some welding over the weekend (fixing something for the wife) and mid project started to smell something burning. Went out to the panel and it smelled terrible, but no smoke or active arcing, but all the lights in the house were flickering.. Called an electrician. He replaced some breakers, but the lights were still flickering. Called the utility to shut off the power to our house and inspect their side of the panel. The main breaker ended up being the culprit.

Cleaned up the bus bar and installed a new main breaker- all good.

So ultimately, something was loose, but it wasn't something out in the branch wiring.

Interestingly, this morning when I was turning my UPS and computers back on, the volt meter on the UPS read out 121-122, whereas before the breaker replacement, it was 118-119. :notsure:
