As long as we've got 10 year olds to be slave labor in the congo for your cobalt... and we can dig holes the size of cities a half mile in to the ground using dump trucks the size of houses to get your lithium.

EV is the way to go

I'm sure they will find a way to recycle all the batteries (even though they have no way to recycle them as of yet)

There are lot's of companies that recycle EV batteries. The cost to do is high as of now and some batteries are reused for storage repurposing.

This is a good thread. Lots of new ideas. People have really read up on and learned new information about modern EV and battery tech since the last version of this thread. Very excited about the progress here. Cracking open a beer now.

Hey thanks!! I will certainly do that if she decides on that route!

Her main vehicle now is a GMC High Top (Explorer) AWD Conversion Van...she loves the room and (I believe) all the flashy chrome/lights/flashy wheels/etc...I HATE IT! The AWD makes it so she can drive it out in the horse pastures and it rides decent in town and is great on trips - but it is too tall for me...we have to have someone wash it as it will not fit through carwashes.

She references the days of her 7 series BMWs (20 years ago at least) and I think as the last 2 kids head off to college she may want to try something similar - maybe bringing back old memories. I've just started looking at cars, I am not a fan of cars - like I was 20-30 years ago - so I will have to do some research. I want dependability as well as luxury and she likes bling - more than she cares to admit.

If all 17.3 million cars were to need charging. But that's not the case. there are about 1% of that 17.3 million cars that are EV in California which includes PHEV's.

Is that really all? That's what, half the population of CA? Hell, Jay Leno by himself probably has 17.3 million cars.

Maybe controversial here, but I feel like folks who don’t want to see vehicles move to electric are modern Luddites. I really struggle to see any reason to WANT to stay with gas.

Electric has more torque/power, less fluids & crap to change, possibility of modular repairs (think more plug & play when a motor goes out, versus removing a car engine/trans now), cheaper daily costs (I’m paying $75 to fill a tank now!), overall less smog/pollution, and you won’t have to hear crappy cars with fart cans at 3am anymore.

You can go out & buy a Tesla that runs mid 10s in the ¼ and there are plenty out there that have 200-400k miles. Electric hummer is gonna have 1,000hp/1,000tq.

Once range issues improve, there’s gonna be very little incentive to use gas... but it’s not like I’m getting 500 miles on a tank right now anyways!

Yeah she gets ticked when I comment on the van...LOL - but she has loved them she has had several over the years...I had to look up the B7...she will say I could get 2 Vans for that price - LOL.

I have said my top dollar is probably 120K...though I admit she would probably like that vehicle. My issue is I KNOW she will miss the room if I get her a car and I will take a huge hit getting out of it.

****PLUS she often travels with our German Shepherd (he is trained for protection)...he would hate a car.

Currently yes but I believe we are talking future. If no more ICE vehicles are allowed to be sold after 2030, that percentage will shift quickly. I am not a smart man but that is less than 10 years away.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!

If there is not an efficient and profitable way to recycle the batteries, they will end up getting stacked in a pile somewhere.

It'll be an awesome thing for the environment... Or maybe they can just use them as fill for the lithium mines. Basically just throw them in a hole. I'll bet China would be more than happy to throw them in their used up lithium mines, as long as they get paid for it.

I wholly agree EV is the future and is objectively better. Preferences aside, I don't think anyone here is trying to debate that. I think the issue in question is more so when. When will EVs be a more economical option? When will EVs have adequate range? When will an infrastructure be in place that can support charging the 276 million vehicles in the US? And when that infrastructure is in place, will it be renewable energy, or will it still be heavily dependent on natural gas, petroleum, coal or best case (of non-renewables) nuclear?

I’m thinking future here. I know they won’t all charge at once but the majority would be plugged in at night, about the same time.
