I have a 1998 Tacoma, automatic, 6cyl. 4x4. crazy thing sometimes curise works , most of the time it does't, on/off switch has no effect, when it decides to work the green ON light illuminates otherwise it stys off, also airbag light faintly stays on even when motor is off and key is removed, my truck has built in clock when it decides to work it loses pwr when I attempt to set the time. this is somewhat aggravating! ant ideas?

Check all of your ground straps. One beside the battery to fender. One from rear passenger cylinder head to firewall. Big main one from lower block to battery. One big cluster that attaches to the intake manifold driver side.

the most common issue is a mis-adjusted brake light switch.

This is a spiral cable issue, very common with Tacoma.

All advise mentioned is helpful, but if you search for spiral cable on here you'll find this correlates with your problem.

Scan the SRS code and you'll see its like B1801 or something close to that.

The spiral cable or clockspring is what connects the steering wheel controls, horn, and air bag to the vehicle, it wears over time.

I bet your horn doesnt work well either.

The only year I can say this about for sure is 1995. I have one that the clock spring seems to be faulty, but everything on the column except the horn still works. It is a 3.4L auto 4x4, has cruise, and it works flawlessly.

I could be wrong because I have not tested the clock spring myself, but, when I bought this truck it had been wrecked. The truck had been in a strong left front collision and the A/B did not deploy. The PO had already installed a small horn switch on the bottom of the steering column. He may have not known the A/B was disabled. I bought it from salvage yard, so I never got to talk to him.
