Electrician

Anybody do home electrical work that can help a fellow tacoma owner? Just moved in to a new place and my garage is all hooked up with outlets but no electricity works in there. Already Checked the electrical panel and nothing.

 

I would help but I'm tx. Get a voltage tester and check the plugs and the breakers. Make sure there's power running to that breaker. Usually 120v

 

This. You will find these in the bathrooms and possibly on an exterior wall

Why would anybody wire a garage downstream from a GFCI ?

Not saying it couldn't happen just makes zero sense

 

Because low T, obviously they don't have any man stuff that needs power.

 

That's the way we have it setup as well.


Any electrician here I tried my own wiring for a bathroom fan and failed.

The NEC (national electric code) changes rules like a baby changes diapers. Usually from a safety stand point, but there is always moisture in a garage rather than your house so a garage with electricity downstream from a GFCI is quite common. I'm sure there are similar practices in Canada.

 

Makes perfect sense. It will just trip out if too much load. I wish my garage was wired up this way with maybe one load off each gfci.
Doing this way is just as safe with all outlets protected just like the gfci and is also cheaper bottom line.

 

Pretty certain you don't wire the inside of a garage on a gfi here , not any of the houses I've ever built , and what about compressor plugs or welding rig set ups or 20A workbench plugs ?

 

Makes no sense , plug in a high start up draw machine like a tablesaw into one and see how that goes .

You are correct for the most part. A garage should have it's own circuit(s).

Usually a builder thinks ahead and should assume the owner will want to power a drill, bandsaw, air mover, etc, something with a motor that draws a lot of amps and plans accordingly.

I wish mine did. I thought kitchens and garages were wired with 20 amp. I just went and checked and my kitchen and garage are 15. It was also built in 96

 

I honestly wish my panel had another place for a 220 breaker. I'd love a heater in the winter. Fml

 

To save money, wire, a breaker and time. Often done by track house builders. I used to be an electrician and have seen that (and worse) many times. GFCI in a garage is cheap insurance (assuming no one ever vacs out their vehicles on a humid summer day in bare feet standing on concrete?) And yes, garages SHOULD have their own circuits.
