If you want to get your feet wet cheap, you could always get a kayfun clone.
I run one on my mvp with a .8 ohm coil and it does really well.

What are the big changes?

 

Liquid Control (open/shut)
Filling through the top cap
Adjustable 510 connector
Any time access to the coil, removal of deck without draining the liquid.
Exchangeable tanks (borosilicate glass, polycarbonate, steel all included in the base kit)
Exchangeable hybrid connectors available separately for the SM-V3 Semovar and Provari 3 , others to follow.

The look is a barreled shape, very cool.

 

And,

Dual coil compatible from what I heard. May be rumor though.

Just ordered another Kayfun 3.1 too D: also have an SoV 5k coming in with a The Copper by Scottua and a Doge for stupid low builds.

 

Yeah been looking at the kayfun on fasttech so i think that will be my first RBA for everyday use but i'll probably also purchase an RDA to learn how to make those thick clouds. anyone recommend what gauge coil that's easy to learn with?

28 is easy to work with, but it's a little fragile
26 is good to work with, recommended for first builders
24 is the bomb diggity and all I use now

Regardless, there's no RBA on the market that has enough airflow for me. Still waiting for a whole new design that has a top coil with tank below, and that has wide open airflow like a normal dripper. And one that will take a comp tip.

 

Thanks for the reply, was also wondering what was recommended in terms of wick.. I'm guessing silica is most popular but have been hearing things about Japanese cotton.

 

Seems like it would be fairly easy to solve. I was thinking a good idea would be to have a tank with a hollow tube going up through the middle. The tank has a button which opens some holes at the bottom and drips onto the coils. You get a true drip system and a tank so you don't have to keep taking the bottle out of your pocket.

 

Silica is nice for learning on. I use Japanese cotton or Organic cotton, they both are about the same. Japanese cotton (to me), wicks easier and tastes cleaner.

Synthetic cotton (rayon?) is super common to use too.

For example, watched his review on the SoV S.O.D 5K, and all he said was the air hole was funny. For real? Seriously? Gtfo.

 

LOL he wasn't the best example. I watched about 6 other reviews on that new Kayfun and they were far better and more informative. I like where they're heading with RBA's, but they're not quite there yet. I've found some top coil RBAs that usually use stainless mesh to wick up from the lower tank, but their airflow sucks and I don't have the right tools/drill press to make effective enlargements without marring up the finish.

 

Pos/neg connections usually have to run up the center of the tank through a sealed post of some sort. Then on top, there should be 2 holes right into the tank for wicking, and a 3 post setup for dual coil on the top platform. Typical drip cap on top just to harness any spilling. I want to shove a thick cotton wick right down the hole to help plug it from pouring juice out if tipped over, feed it up into the coils, but let the wicks draw just the right amount of fluid up to the coils to keep them moist. Then, big air holes on the side for wide open draws. I'll spend good money on that setup because I hate dripping and driving. Although with the competition cap, I now can drip right into the mouthpiece and right onto my coils so it is easier on the road.

The Kraken is so close, but it doesn't have big enough airflow. And something with all 3 posts raised so I can do horizontal coils, too. Oh yeah, and in 28mm. Not that I'm picky or anything...

 

Try hemp fibers like Elfwick. Hemp has a higher burn point than cotton.
