Has anybody converted the electronic 4WD system to a manual system in 2nd gen tacos? I had a few previous posts about troubleshooting the electronic 4WD system, but went a different route and have decided to somehow make the tcase manually operated. I pulled the front ADD off and locked my front axle so all I will have to do is get into 4WD from the tcase. I pulled the tcase actuator off over the weekend exposing just the shift shaft. Just by operating this shift shaft (since my front axle is locked) I am able to get into 4WD. Now just got to rig up a linkage system or buy something. Anyone got any ideas or can refer me to a custom website?

Swap to an atlas or an fj case. The Tacoma cases are junk.

Any idea of what FJ t cases are compatible with the 2nd gen tacoma? And from there I still have to rig up some custom made levers and have them come up into the cab?

Yeah those are great write ups thanks. I didn’t see a model number or anything in those threads. Am I able to buy any old FJ t case then? Are there different FJ t cases for manual and auto?

You’re quite the legend on here 6geart444e. I’ve been reading a lot of different forums on here about the FJ t case swap and am starting to learn. I am eager to perform the swap just need to know a couple of things. I need to buy an FJ t case that came from an auto? I have a 5 speed auto 05 taco, will this manual FJ t case bolt right up or is there another mod I need? I know there was mention of changing the input splines or something but I thought that was for a 6 speed manual vehicle, not an auto. RST sell FJ cases for around $1,000, but you can buy FJ t cases online for around $400....what are RST doing to those t cases that they can charge that much? Is it just the twin sticks? I only need the stock J shifter. thanks for all your help, just a noob

:humble:Thanks I'd hardly say a legend, just one of the early guinea pigs to do the swap so I've learned some things along the way. Not sure what a 5 speed auto taco is I assume you have the A750F automatic transmission behind a V6 or the R155F behind the 4 cyl, either way those transmission have are the same 23 spline outputs that the manual shifting FJ cruiser transfer case from an automatic FJ cruiser have on their input shaft. If this is the case you would need not to swap anything, and it's a direct bolt in minus cutting the floorboard to route the new FJ transfer case shifter.

The only truck that requires swapping the input shaft in is the RA60F from the manual transmission 6 speed tacomas, as these have a larger 22 spline output.

As far as buying them, I would not recommend buying from RST for two reasons:
1 - he is a crook and you'll likely never receive your product offered, reference this thread
2 - before he was scamming people, the cases were way over priced. You can get a junkyard tcase for half of what he charges.

The only thing RST did was "go over" the transfer case to check the internals, most of which should be in good shape assuming you got a low mileage case. He would twin stick them as well, which is fairly easy to do on your own, but since you aren't interested there's a third reason not to buy from RST. If you get a tcase in decent shape, there's really nothing short term that goes wrong with these cases and they are pretty reliable, assuming the PO changed the oil once in a while. The only wear items are chain stretch (VERY long term wear item), bearings, trochoid pump, and syncho for the 2/4wd engagement. All of those parts are able to be purchased from a reputable online store that sells OEM toyota parts, and are pretty straightforward to replace with the only specialty tool really needed is a bearing splitter.

Awesome response thanks again. Yeah forgive my lingo, I have the A750F auto transmission. I will try and source an FJ t case from an auto FJ from a junkyard and/or online. When I search for the t cases they seldom come with the stock j shifter, but that isn’t a big deal, I’ll put any appropriately sized shifter in there. I did see some OEM FJ shifters online but they are around $300.

I have seen people have their t case manual shifter (twin or single) come up through their cab in different locations, but wouldn’t it be the same location since the t case is directly bolted behind the transmission and the shifter is bolted to the t case is only one position? It’s hard to tell from looking under the truck and getting a gauge of where the shifters will come up through the cab.

My Taco is a 4 banger, so it uses the A340F which I believe is basically the same trans in my 3rd gen 4runner. If the output shafts in the trans are the same between the 4runner trans and the Taco trans, does it stand to reason that a basic "j" shift 3rd gen 4ruuner t-case should bolt up to my '15 Taco trans? I could even goes as far as trying to fit a multi-mode t-case into the Taco, although some wiring/control modules would get involved.

That's really up to where you want the shifter to be located, most people cut the shifter base off and weld/bend/extend up to where they like it located and fit within the limitations of the console area.

Thanks for the build thread Pdugan6 I will check it out. 6GearT444E I want my shifter to come through the coin slot, but not sure if the j shift pattern on the stock shifter needs more room. I will look and see when I take the case off, get the new one and see where it lines up first.

So without considering desired shifter placement, where would the shifter protrude up if you didn’t do any welding mods? In other words, where is the actual location the manual shifter comes up through the cab if you straight up bolted the t case on? Because this stock location might be good enough for me. I don’t know anyone who welds and would prefer to knock this job out on my own.

    Not to hijack but...

What's it take to put an FJ on an RC62F(?) 3rd gen 6 speed manual?
