Just wanted to give a final update and resolution to the problem...

It ended up being a dirty air flow censor.
Had it cleaned and it passed smog.

For all I know the cats are on their last lap, but I won’t have to deal with it for 2 years...

But that damn K&N air unit was the problem....dirt and oil getting through and screwing up the reading making it throw a code. Getting rid of the K&N as soon as I find a OEM unit...

Thanks again to everyone who pitched in and read this long thread.

I don't know if I mentioned it in this thread but I've said it to anyone on this forum that says they run an oiled filter....toss that shit in the trash. MAF sensors hate them. Happened to me too when I was younger on a different Tacoma of mine, I had to replace the sensor.

aFe makes a Pro-Dry filter that is reusable and washable but doesn't require oil, grab one of those (or go OEM paper, anything is better than the oiled K&Ns.

Glad you got it figured out and it wasn't the cats! Much less $$$ that way.

I like mine, perfect for if you wheel a lot...I was going through the OEM paper ones every few weeks at one point. Being able to wash the aFe filter saves me a lot of money over time.

Here's a link to the aFe filter...just have to pick the right engine combo. It's a drop in air filter just like the OEM one but you can wash it when needed, I usually just soak it in a light simple green solution for a little while and let it dry out.

Ooohhh in that case you may want to see what K&N offers, I believe they have dry filter options as well.

I was planning to remove the k&n entirely, sell it and buy OEM or maybe another full solution. Whatever works

Could probably find a stock airbox in a junkyard or even on here when someone decides to go aftermarket....actually you might be able to trade your setup with someone that wants a CAI for their stock setup.

If you're not interested in dropping $ on a new OEM airbox and have no qualms about keeping the current intake on your vehicle, then you may want to look at our conical style "Dry Filters" (part# 615010D, 615011D or 615012D dependant on filter length) that may work as a viable replacement, and as the name implies it does not need to be "refreshed" with filter oil. One of the best benefits of this filter is when it's used in conjunction with our "Pre Filter" covers the maintenance interval is substantially increased. If you'd like more info on how our "Dry Filters" and "Pre Filters" can help you out please contact us at 707-544-4761.
