K&n carb number, they only offer two different intakes and both are carb legal. If you need the sticker i would call them and see about getting a new one

I hope this will highlight the problems so I can get to solutions instead of just attacking symptoms. If there is something wrong with sensors or spark plugs, etc. and they ruined the cat, simply replacing the cat will ruin the next one as well.

Do you know if this is just a model code, like the K&N model number needed, or if it is a serial number that is specific to each cat converter unit sold and installed?

A few things to know when getting the emmission monitors to run their test...

there are multiple monitors that are 2 trip monitors, meaning that it requires 2 trips with the same settings to get these monitors to run their test cycle. The evap monitor is one and it requires a very specific set of circumstances. The fuel tank MUST be between 1/4 and 3/4 full. There is a minimum time frame between tests, usually 8 hours and the intake air temp sensor MUST be within 10 degrees of coolant temperature and this has to be done twice.

Most drive cycles start with the motor idling for less than a minute then a "normal" drive patteren "should" set them. The Catalyst test requires you to drive for some 20 minutes at a steady MPH, usually 45 mph.

The less expensive OBDII scanners require you to check for completion, they are not dynamic, you have to press the button on the screen to get the new updated info.

When I have a problem child vehicle that needs a smog I will usually drive it around at night and when the monitors finally clear I drive it immediatly over to my smog guys shop and drop it off and be the first guy in the AM. Too many times the customer needed the car back immediatly and questionable issue will reoccur. Now I am doing the same job twice. If there is an issue and the CEL comes on later you have time to fix it at your leasure because you are not in a time crunch. Is this best for the environment, no... life is tough enough, dont need a car dictating when and what I have to do.

The picture i sent is the carb eo number for k&n intakes, they only make 2 for are truck and both are carb legal. You need the eo number visible or atleast on hand in your truck to show that its carb legal, if you lost that sticker i would call k&n and see what it takes to get a new sticker

yeah if you go to a legit exhaust shop, they can't sell you a non-CARB approved cat. The good news for our 1st gen Tacomas though is that there are a lot of cheap options for CARB legal cats, if you have a 2nd gen there are ZERO and you have to get an OEM Toyota cat (if you live in CA). And we all know how $$$$$ those are.

OEM are pricey for a reason though, they are by far made out of the best material and will last the longest.

I will try to look in between the floor bed and the top of the cat to get the number, but I don't think there is enough room for my head and eyes to peer over it.

I'll be researching this as soon as my scanner comes in and I get the codes and a read on the situation. Would rather buy used than new...

I hear you. Try posting a WTB post here on the site. Lots of people ditch them for the K&Ns and/or have them leftover in a parts pile that they no longer need. You may be able to pick one up cheap, but it may take a while.

Your's looks like my back cat (OEM I believe), with the heat shield and all. Is yours OEM?

THis is my front cat. By the way, does this even look legit?

So I looked and used my phone to take pics where I couldn't get eye level views. No number that I know of is on this thing.

looks like yours was already replaced once. Toyota uses flanges, that one is welded on.
