My truck started throwing up codes, (like rough idle and some other engine codes) so I took it in and I was told its more than likely my emissions - either my evap pump or the solenoid, its name escapes me but it basically auto-scavenges excess exhaust fumes and purges them. I was quoted $580 out the door for a ‘charcoal canister’. that price good or should I look elsewhere?

I know the truck has been overfilled once like 10,000 miles ago, so I'm thinking that maybe the solenoid got a bit of gas in it, and maybe I can just clean the valve and put it back in??? I’m off tomorrow so ill look at it better after work tonight

Anyways what do you guys think?

    EDIT:

P2401 - Evaporative Emission System Leak Detection Pump Control Circuit Low

P2402 - Evaporative Emission System Leak Detection Pump Control Circuit High

P2419 - Evaporative Emission System Switching Valve Control Circuit Low

P043E - Evap Leak Detection Reference Orifice Low

    EDIT:

Turned out to be the charcoal canister, it was ‘very full’ and it'll be around $480 to be put in, + labor.

Also the fuel injection pump is getting replaced, but thats because of a recall that I missed.

Its possible you have fallen to failed SAIS valves due to the lack of a shutdown purge on your 2012's ecu.

That system injects fresh air into the exhaust on startup to help the cats to their job with the extremely rich exhaust mixture. During running moisture gets built up in the valves by nature of combustion, and unfortunately on the 2012's toyota forgot to put a shutdown purge (where the valves open and the pump runs) to push the moisture out of the valves.

The real question is what were/are the codes being thrown? Let us know that and we will go from there.

    Thank you, very informative.

So its not the evap pump that kicks in the first 5 seconds of startup,
(or rather that the evap pump doesn't kick in at shutdown)
but the sais valve thats covered in moisture thats kicking the sensor on correct? So if thats the case can I just manually open the valve and let it dry itself out?

They cleared the codes a couple days ago, and it ran fine for 1 full day, then when I went to turn it on the next morning they were back.
    Check engine and TRAC off
Im going to stop by the dealership tomorrow and ill get you the codes then,

My friend might have a OBD reader, but I'm not betting on it so ill have the dealership pull them tomorrow

The first thing I’d do is see what the codes are
If it pertains to the Secondary Air Injection System, I’d take them this document.
Until you know what the codes are for sure, and what is causing the problem there isn’t too much you can do.

    Yeah definitely get the codes.

It also could very easily be the gas cap isnt sealing right. Usually evap codes that pop up that dont put the truck into limp mode is a case of a leaky gas cap.

Cool read. Ive always noticed my 2012 doesnt run the AIS when shut down, but buddy's 2013 does. Just another thing I need to keep an eye out for I suppose haha

Secondary Air Injection System injects air into the engine exhaust manifold. Evap valve and purge solenoid are for the fuel tank vapors. Unrelated systems with different fault codes.

Beware that Secondary Air Injection System failures tend to be 4-figure repairs if they're caused by a faulty air pump or switching valves, so that doesn't make your situation any better. Post the actual codes so you aren't barking up the wrong tree.

Been there done that. Prepare for LIMP MODE. My sons 2012 did this and I tried the taking it off and just cleaning it. Worked great for about a week then it went in limp mode and he was stuck on the interstate going 45 mph for 35 min till he made it home. Its not hard to fix yourself but the parts will run ya 500 or so.

Yea they cover it now but a few years ago when it happened to us it was not. I got a letter saying it was now covered and if I had already done the repair to show the receipts and I would be reimbursed but of course I have no idea where they were. I did it myself anyway and don't know if they would have just reimbursed the parts. Always keep your receipts.

I believe that was amended to:
The Primary Coverage is applicable until February 28, 2019 with no year/mileage limitation.
After the Primary Coverage period ends, the Secondary Coverage is applicable for 10 years from the date of first use, regardless of mileage.

This is per the pdf that @TnShooter uploaded above

Good to know - especially if yours is a 2012.

Yeah. Kind of makes me wonder if an external relay w/ timer could be added to power the pump for a ~10 seconds after shutdown. Its probably more complicated than that..

So - good news and bad news, bad news is that I somehow lost the card that had all the codes she pulled (14 popped up since I started this thread but it boiled down to 4 ‘unique codes’)

Good news is that I have an appointment with the master tech 2 weeks from now to get it sorted out and most likely will be covered by TSB, but who knows.

Sorry I lost those codes guys, but I can say that the reoccurring codes were either the pump being stuck on or off or some other type of emissions problem, like one was the pressure relief valve was stuck open and etc. but it definitely sounds like its a pump issue.

This makes me think that maybe putting my volant air kit on a while back then taking it off had something to do with this, because I remember messing with the evap pump when I put it on but all I think I did was relocate it.

Hopefully it’s all due to the pump and it’s covered under the extended warranty.
Please do let us know how it turns.
