Pretty certain it's not illegal. I worked for a DOD company, weren't allowed to bring ANYTHING in. No phones, ext HD, thumb drives, computers, iPod, etc. At first it was annoying but not really a big deal. People survived without them before they were around, they'll survive now. Where I work now is a private company and we are close to banning them. People are dumb and just abuse it. Cost a lot in wages for lost productivity.

One of my jobs has strict rules for phone use, but its on the employee to follow them of face the punishment. My other job has a huge policy handbook about phone use at work and informational security and workplace internet policy and rules. But no one is ever there the same time as me in the admin building, so I can basically do as I please.

The strange part is, studies show that allowing people to work for 45 - 50 minutes then have a 10 to 15 break increases productivity.

My first metioned job works out so that I work about 50 minutes then take 10 to 12 off and it keeps me very concentrated for the work time.

If it were my company, I wouldn't take people's phones. I would give everyone a written notice that the company does not allow personal phones for non-emergency use while people are suppose to be working. At the end of the notice, I would inform my employees that if caught breaking the company regs, it would be grounds for immediate dismissal. Come back and get your final check tomorrow.

My company has a no cell policy but nobody pays it any attention. Most of us full timers keeps them in our pocket on vibrate and use them only on necessity which imo actually saves time. I mean I only use mine for a quick text regarding anything important that would in the old days require me finding a phone and making a call that would take up 2-3 minutes or more. Now a quick text and done. Problem is so many take adavntage and give us a bad rep. We have a lot of temporaries that know their time is limited because they will not hire them full time so they don't care.

I've heard there was talk of the big boss putting cell phone Jammers which is illegal as I've read up. Point is if everybody would only use them out of necessity it wouldn't be an issue. And we don't have access to Internet or even have our own computer at work so my phone is my media source and want to keep it handy for my break times.

It just pisses me off that because of the temps/abusers that we(the ones that are responsible) could one day be cracked down on for them.

And if you forget to put it on vibrate and it rings during the day you run the risk of your employers terminating you on the spot for violating company policy...

Personally, if it were me, I'd lock it in my truck and make sure the alarm company has my work number. Taking a stand against what seems an odd workplace policy may make sense in the short term, but if you live in an at-will state then you'll find that taking a stand (and unemployment) won't necessarily pay the bills.

    I'm "guilty"

    of....

Nothing, I guess, since my employer addresses said use in its people manual and doesn't make using company internet, iPads, cellular devices etc against policy for personal use.

But, hey, maybe you'd have liked Dachau.

I certainly hope it was merely sarcasm... but in this day and age sarcasm isn't always as apparent as it used to be.

Plenty of jobs require you to wear certain clothes, remove cell phones, jewellery, wear no makeup, etc. Think the clean rooms in a microprocessor fab, or the paint shops in a Toyota plant.

You are certainly free to quit and work somewhere with a more relaxed culture.

OP and all, take a read. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=123024596

There are a lot of things employers can do that you may not agree with or even question the legality of. I especially like the one where workers were fired for social drinking because the boss believes alcohol is a sin.

I can't have a cell phone or Apple watch/Samsung at work. My email and conversations are monitored, and I have to give my Work number out as a contact number, even forward my cell to it when I'm at work just in case.

I can't have my phone because I work in a prison and it does suck not being able to know what's going on in the outside world but I do believe that they cannot tell you that you have to turn your phone over. They don't own your phone/nowadays it's pretty much a necessity. If you got kids tell them it's needed for an emergency or are you a pilot/ flight attendant lol. I do remember about two years back when I was working construction before I got my job now. We were at a prosthetic joint company that didn't allow the use of phones anywhere near the areas they were working. One time I took it out of my pocket walking down the hall to the bathroom and about A min later someone walked I behind me like fucking secret agent style asking to check my phone and I laughed and then he explained so I showed him my phone and was on my way back to work laughing. But some company's can afford for anything to be leaked for be competition to see and have a chance of putting them out of business as I see it.

You can be made to lock it up in a lock box. I have a diabetic kid and have to forward my cell to my work phone.

I would complain to your union rep, wait, no union? Vote prolabor next time and maybe you will get one. Live in a state with "right to work?", why don't you move some where else that has decent labor protection.

And you are always free to follow the advice of the senior leadership and go start you own business, every day on the country music radio stations I hear all about the miracle get rich schemes.
