I was on a project with a previous employer that had a strict no cell phone policy due to safety and productivity concerns. I didn't really like it, but it was pretty understandable in the heavy industrial setting.

My current job requires me to have my cell phone on me at all times and to check emails and messages every 4 hours outside of regular work hours (yes, even in the middle of the night).

I didn't really like not being able to carry a cell phone, and I don't really like having to check it at 2am. IMO both beat the alternative of a "more relaxed culture" where I didn't have any cell restrictions (because I also wouldn't be able to have as many mods). Some people disagree. If you don't like the conditions of your employment and you don't have the power to renegotiate them, find something else?

Someone probably already said this but find another job or like someone did say leave it in the car. They are probably doing this due to a decline in production or trying to increase production. Sucks but I have had worse done by previous employers. If people start quitting maybe they will reconsider or maybe not.

Maybe your employer read this article:

    http://ridiculouslyefficient.com/the-average-worker-is-only-productive-for-3-hours-a-day/

Granted when I worked at a previous company, I was only good for about 5.5-6 hours. If it was hectic I may have pulled an 8 hour marathon, but I was useless after that and my performance suffered due to it. Not stating that working for only 3 hours is acceptable at all (and frankly I would fire someone if they were only getting 3 hours done a day), but for a boss to assume all 8 hours are going to be hard dedicated work is absurd.

I have worked at a few sites when I was doing medical device calibration that were no cellphone allowed zones. The first week kinda sucked, but after that, it was just the way it was and I had no issue. The only problem is what do I do when I am taking a dump? Sometimes I need a bit to get ready, and without my phone, I would push too hard and hurt myself.

Might have read that once...Upton Sinclear was it? One of the famous muckrackers. Didn't one of the children end up eaten by rats while still alive? and the sister became a drunken prostitute?

So far I've added an Advance folding bed cover and since removed it. Gave it to my son in Maine, he has an 05 2wd. GT perfect fit seat covers. Weathertech floor mats and window vent visors. Waag center brush/grill guard. Hose clamp tailgate mod. Turned off the seat belt chime. Added Ultra-Gauge. Trailer hitch. Softopper. Replaced sun visors with slide out style. Toyota bed extender. Had Firestone Destinations and now Michelin LTX AT2 in stock size. More mods to come; Fog lights, locking storage in bed, intermittent wipers. Now looking for Radio/HU upgrade. and maybe a lift way down the road.
My union would not fight this. Not winnable.

One persons entitlement is another's fair working conditions. Ever work in a coal mine, steel mill, ship breaker?

Busted my ass in construction for over 40 years. Only thing I was entitled to was a paycheck if I showed up and did my job.

I used to work closely with a Labor Council representing all the unions involved in our sites. Not only did our construction workers get a paycheck, they were on the health and safety committee, a portion of their pay went into retirement, we provided training and life time medical monitoring for on the job exposure to radioactive material.

Now in Texas, my neighbor ran a small construction company, every worker on the job was an independent contractor and he treated his cattle better than his workers. At least the cows didn't have their pay checked dubbed for work related injuries...

I am in management now, but used to be a Teamster when I worked as a heavy truck/equipment mechanic.

I always have to thank unions - I got fired by the UFCW and IAMAW for working too hard. Was told on all three jobs that if my assignments were done, I was to sit in the break room until my shift was over and not take on any more work.
Decided there was no way I was going to put up with that for the rest of my life and got a college degree and white collar job.

I do recognize and appreciate what was fought for in the past and do still see use currently in some areas, but I'm not pro union in anyway ; especially teamsters...

Let me show you how friendly ex-teamsters can be, I would love to sit down and a have a few beers with you, and perhaps convince you that we are not all no-neck type who might have "family" connections:)

Currently watching the lovely members of the local unions take days and days on projects that shouldn't take more than a couple hours. They're great!

Alright, this thread isn't a pro/anti Union debate. Let's not go down that road.

help me out here, but it almost appears to me that this could be looked at like, kind of an insult, and I am sure if it does read like that, it must be a mistake.

All that I am asking is that you show me and my union brothers a little respect, and certainly if you take care of us, we can take care of you and your needs.

Now it is almost Friday afternoon and time to put away the tools and perhaps locate a cold beer or two, union make of course:)
