Sorry, that came off harsh and not as intended. I have issues with the general organizations and not the people for the most part.
However, it does appear I mouthed off and I am sorry for that

It sounds like poor management. I assume this came about because certain shitty workers abuse the previous lenient policy by always being on their phone. Boss could have dealt with those people and allowed everyone to keep their phone on them for emergencies. Blanket "zero tolerance" rules are usually put in place because the managers/supervisors haven't got the balls to deal with the offenders.

Sounds totally legal. Weird they want you to turn them in, instead of leaving them your rig.

I'd be interested in actually reading the company policy or memo from the boss man before i freak out about HAVING to hand them in...

I'd be willing to bet that it's actually worded more towards no cell phones in the workplace...you're free to find an alternative such as leaving it in the vehicle.

I'm not sure how some of ya'll survived pre-cell phone era

And you wonder why so many American job were/are outsourced overseas. I'd like to see how many union jobs were outsourced overseas compared to non union jobs. I could hazard a guess, but it would ONLY be a guess.

Nothing wrong with this policy. If you don't agree with it find a new job.

Unfortunately people can't handle being without their phones these days, they literally become unhinged. To me that just speaks to how toxic they really are (and I'm a tech guy!). It's basically the human need for attention. When we get a text, or see someone commented on something we posted on Facebook we feel better about ourselves. This constant reinforcement is what some people have come to rely on and they feel lost without it.

I'd never give my phone to my employer to hold; I'd leave it in my vehicle. But I also refuse to work somewhere that requires I install tracking software on my phone. My current company's mobile device management software which is required to get corporate e-mail on the phone allows the company to look up the location of the device returning the coarse network location. If users disabled the location tracking on the phone the phone will no longer get company e-mail until the location tracking is re-enabled. Luckily my job doesn't require me to have corporate email on my phone so I don't care.

That being said I see tons of productivity hours lost on people surfing and messaging on their phone ALL shift long. Why they don't get fired for low productivity is beyond me but it blows my mind. I'd say the average worker around me actually works for about 2 to 3 hours out of an 8 hour shift (plus an unpaid hour for lunch) with the rest of the time blown on their phones or surfing the web.

I think you should look to Germany, very high union membership and very high export balance of trade, so unions work for Germany, and it also works for the high skill occupations. Where is fails is where workers are low skill and immediately replaceable.

And you probably took a paycut with the white collar job, at least at the beginning...

My employer gives me a company phone. I make personal calls and browse TW on it and pretend to be working. :D

Sister and cousins born, raised and still live in DE. It's a totally different ball game. It's not an apples to apples comparision.

Not even close - $10.50/hr to $22/hr + bonus, profit sharing, stock and massively better benefits.
    - for full disclosure, the break even after college cost, loss of income while in school, etc was 12yrs. probably wouldn't have been as much if I didn't overspend in college though...

sounds like a lot of employees using their cell phones for social purposes while getting paid to do it, i despise people that do that. . .

its no different than stealing. but i would also want my phone on me for emergency reasons, so catch 22. . .

Leave your phone in the truck but remember if you bring your phone in and get caught, you will lose your job and not be able to make your truck payments.

Same here, lived and worked there and there was a big push against unions especially from small family owned businesses.

Agreed. It's rampant. Schools are just as ridiculous.

There was life, and emergencies, before cell phones existed. They got handled.

Cell phones are not a necessity for the vast majority of us. The manufacturers and carriers just want us to think they are.

I work in a security sensitive area where no phones or cameras are allowed.if you need a phone for emergencies you can get a phone with no camera or internet and register it at the security office. If you need a phone for emergencies see if he will let you fet a burner phone with no internet to ensure him you will not be on facebook all day
