Empty electrical port under driver tail light. What is it for?

I was under my ‘23 4-cyl SR in the back and noticed an empty female electrical port (in red). This is on the drivers side just under the back bumper.

Does anyone know what this is for?

I would like to eventually install a tow hitch, so I’m hoping that maybe it’s a prewire for the 7/4 pole connector (in green). But that may be wishful thinking.

    Any clues?

Seems plausible. Mine is 2015 so not the same. How many pins are inside of it?

Also, have you looked up parts for it? Should be able to on Toyota dealer parts dept. searches.

My TRD OR access cab has the blank rectangular connector, too. I suspect it's for either blind spot monitoring sensors or parking sensors.

Tow wiring comes from the relay box under the hood and is part of the giant harness running down the frame. It goes straight to the tow plug with no jumper or anything. In other words, you don’t have tow wiring, and that unused plug is not for towing. Pretty sure that’s for BSM & Sonar.

If @3JOH22A has a TRD OR and also has that blank, then it's definitely not for the hitch. I'm guessing it is for the sensors like you said...which I don't have either. The plan for my hitch is to go aftermarket and get an etrailer 4 pole package and splice the OEM 7 pole cap so it looks clean. Just more work than I was hoping.

    Thanks for confirming!

Unfortunately, I know for a fact that the trailer 7-4 connects to its round connector which is then hardwired into the entire frame harness. On non-tow models, they don’t have that built into their frame harness.

And to help extra confirm, I also have a TRD OR with that unused connector as well. It’s gotta be BSM/Sonar related and I’m pretty sure I actually dug into the wiring diagram in the past and confirmed it.

Thankfully it’s not the end of the world to add on an additional harness, although it’s less sleek for sure. It’ll look nice and clean once you’re done at least.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. In the end it will just be a 4 pole (lights and brakes) that works, but the 7/4 connector will at least keep it looking clean. Thanks for the info.

If anyone one on here knows, It's probably @caribe makaira
Or possibly @Dm93 , But he and I have 2nd Gens. So we can't really run out at lay eyes on the connector.

This. Caribe knows all on Tacoma wiring!
There was just a thread about adding a 7 pin hookup on trucks without it.
My google fu is weak, but it seems like you run a harness from the drivers side kick panel to the rear
and install the plugs. A 4 cylinder will be limited in what it can tow efficiently

    try here:https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/tow-info-help.845384/

It's the zombie detector port. Leave it alone.

2019 sport with tech package (BSM and parking sensors) and both of those are used on my truck. I just installed the license plate light disable in reverse harness that a user on this forum sells and one end attaches to the white plug in your pic. White must be for tail lights and the black for sensors

If I knew what the wire colors were and had a better picture of the connector I could probably figure it out but as is I can't really tell you.

The guy in this thread has a 2023. I went and looked and it looks to be connector BE1 is the one in question. And it’s for blind spot. Haven’t confirmed if sonar is also there, but it likely is.

I have 2023 diagrams. I will check and see what I can find.
