Is there a reason to put a switch in at all? Why not just disconnect pin 17 at both ends of the harness? If you are worried about going back to the factory setup after, you can always just put the wire back in...

Factory installed navigation and GPS (if you have them) act very odd with pin 17 disconnected (on my 2017 with Nav). Other trims and years may act differently.

With it disconnected, GPS initially wont update at all, however it eventually updates on a low refresh rate after 10-30 minutes of driving. Nav doesnt start (at least initially). That is what I remember off the top of my head without going and testing again or finding old notes...

I have my override left 'on' (open circuit) continuously. The only time that I toggle it is when doing head unit firmware updates out of caution. Also, I do not use the Entune nav much at all. That said, the first time that I toggle the override, it does take a long time for the current location to refresh. Once it starts updating though, there is never a problem, even restarting the ignition. It is just that first toggle that is delayed, or at least that has been my experience.

    Interesting
On mine, after it finally started working again disconnected, refresh rate seemed to take a definite hit. Like maybe 1hz for connected vs 0.3 hz for disconnected (without trying to pull up my notes or video I shot of it).

I wonder if the difference I noticed isnt the gps refresh, but the head unit doing dead reckoning between gps updates using the pin 17 speed data and magnetic heading data...

I will take a look at that today. I did not notice anything there, but I was not paying attention. The refresh rate would be important for getting timely prompts.

I had the same experience. Initially it was laggy. But just leaving it, it worked like normal.

I confirmed what you are seeing. With the override engaged, the refresh rate is about 1sec, and with the override off, it is probably three times faster. Great job noticing that.

Now, I just need to learn to unsee it.

No worries! Little quirks like that are interesting.

I think it's pretty cool that (I THINK) they do stuff like fusion using gps and dead reckoning with speed sensor and magnetic direction...

I completely agree. Using all that is available to improve resolution.

The override is insanely useful also. It is a nice combination.

I pretty only use the built in nav for seeing where I currently am and what the posted speed limit is. If I actually want to navigate to something, I'm using my iPhone. Sounds like in my use case the location update interval won't matter much so when I'm in there later I'll just remove the wire all together.
