All these 3.5 engines got some sort of tapping, or clatter noises. Their just different. We have a water company here that still has a fleet of them, and they clatter like a diesel idling in neutral and even get noisier idling at a stop light in drive. These guys run them on service calls all day 24/7. Currently they've been changing over to rangers, so we'll see how that plays out.

Half these people will never want to get the message,

When you buy a used vehicle and you do not know how it was maintained PERSONNALLY then you trust what they say and what is on paper.
90% of the time a used vehicle is either poorly cared for OR is someone else's found a problem because they sold it and now it's your future problem.

10,000 oil changes in 3-4 years and they trade it,
Engine is diagnosed with a problem that will get worse and they trade it,
Someone screws up and uses the wrong transmission fluid, engine oil or weight or type of gear oil,.. no problem today BUT sell it soon!

The OP may want to consider ordering a NEW short block from Toyota and using what he can from his engine to get back on the road.
This is a bit more expensive, but it will be a new engine for the most part.
Estimate on the SB is about $6-7K and a good mechanic to pull the old engine swap the heads ect. and reinstall should take 35-45 hours.

Cheaper than a used vehicle and will last longer than one for sure.
    OR
Just drive somewhere and trade it in on another rolling gamble of when and where is this new USED one is going down.

You should check on the engine component's warranty. I remember a few years back and saw an older Tacoma I mean way back in 90's around a 78-79 Toyota truck in the corner of the
dealer's garage and they were rebuilding the engine. I walked over to the mechanic and said to me who would spend that money on a truck that old ( it was in really rough shape, rust galore and dents etc etc. The mechanic said to me that he did not like working on that truck as to him it was a junkyard bound vehicle but the motor was still under warranty so they were committed to rebuilding it that blew my mind could not believe my eyes and ears. So check it out you never know as the dealer won't tell you. just saying.

    Work in progress...
Are you sure it is not going through the cleaning cycle? I bought my tacoma with 15,000 miles on it from the local Ford dealer. Day after I bought the truck I stopped at the mail box and the truck started that cleaning cycle. Sounded just like the top end was going out. Never heard about the cleaning cycle, I shut the truck down. Anyhow, how ended up finding this TacomaWorld. I googled Tacoma 3.5 engine top end knocking sound. Anyhow, is it a tap or a knock or what? Maybe let us hear a short video of the noise.

Amazing. My taco has 35 k on it. 2016 trd sport with 3.5. It has the ticking sound also. Always toyota oil and 3000 mile change interval. Of course my beloved taco has engine issues. Have not been on tacoma world for quite a while. Now I discover the 3.5 is a lemon.
Was really wondering why my taco ticked so bad

Damn, 90% of used vehicles are poorly cared for or have problems. Does that apply to leases too? LOL I'm sorry, doesnt appear to be much fact or you are just spoutin shit.

I guess I'm going to need more than "a tapping noise" to decide whether it's a real issue, or a dealer who is clueless or greedy.

My truck sounds like a radio operator on the Titanic at midnight.

For all we know it be Trolls working for GM or Ford trying to dethrone the Tacoma. Believe 1/2 of what you hear and all of what you see. I read some of this stuff for entertainment.
