A couple points and some advice for OP…

Could it be the folks with few post counts came here, as it is one of the biggest Tacoma forums and brought there problems because they don’t no where else to go?

Second - Overall, there are a LOT os 3.5’s on the road vs the handful of few here pointing out some failures/concerns.

OP, 20+ years ago I bought a 3.4 T100. By 65-70k miles my 3.4 had developed a VERY noticeable tap/knock in the heads.

Dealership suggest I rebuild, thought I was loosing a valve. I decided to run it until it died.

I pulled that motor 15 years later at 330k with the same valve train noise to replace with a V8.
(Actually sold the used motor too).

    Run it.

Sure it’s possible people come here only when they need help. I didn’t think anything of it until we had about five of these different scenarios over the course of a handful of weeks. Seemed a bit strange is all.

In all honestly I had a 2012 SR5 with the 4.0. That thing pinged and ran like crap on regular gas. On super no problem. I couldn't stand the dealer acknowledging the problem yet waiting for a possible reflash so I traded it in. Neighbor had same year same problem but not as bad. Still has his with over 136k. Who'd have thunk it.

My 2G ran terribly on 87. There actually was a TSB to address this. It would also solve the clunk in and out of overdrive that my truck suffered from but I could never get the dealer to do it.

Funny you don't hear anything about this over on the 4runner forum. Oh a couple mention in a thread about a loud ticking noise, but that's it. No thread on it or any engine failures.......hmmmm.

That's because the 1GR is superior to the 2GR. Especially in regards to reliability.

My bad, I assumed it was upgraded to the 2GR about the time the Taco was. I am new to Tacoma ownership and guess I am glad I have a lifetime powertrain warranty.

New 4runner still gets the 4.0 1GR. Which is really odd. It's as if Toyota pinned the 1GR against the 2GR. The 1GR won that battle, hands down.

probably a lifter....? Can you replace lifters just by pulling the manifold? So much more complicated than back in my day. But if its a stuck lifter, and I can't think of what else would make a tapping noise, then surely there is an answer short of total replacement of the engine. Back when V8 was in everything, a stuck lifter treatment was some kind of oil thinner to wash out the clog in the lifter, then a quick change back to normal oil once the lifter quit tapping.

My first car was a 1966 Chevy Belair with a 283 V8 and a two... TWO speed tranny. I did most work myself, back when the tools were made of stone. :)

283 matched with the power glide transmission was the perfect combination. Had it in my first hand me down car a 1966 4 door yellow impala. Took it to prom in 1984. No need for a limo.
