I’m at 5600 miles on my 2020. I think I’m getting my oil changed early after reading this thread!
Hopefully you have no more issues down the road

Not good and I just bought a 2020. I really have no idea what Toyota is thinking. They just keep milking their historical reliability status and are slow to upgrade the truck, cheap out on paint, now large particles in the oil are the norm?

Heck I was searching the forum and it seems some early 3rd gens had a lack of grease in the u joints. I assumed this was fixed by 2020 but do I need to get under my rig to check this myself?

If Toyota hasn't fixed a rotting frame in 3 Tacoma generations, you should probably check.

Yes, yes you should. Do your own quality checks. Each truck is different. I think they have Monday and Friday assembly problems, or the robots get out of calibration and a bunch of trucks get assembled before one is pulled for inspection. They fix the machines but let "X" number of iffy trucks go uninfected and with possible issues.

Will do. Is it just certain u joints to check? Any other grease areas or other common areas I should look at also? I saw AT boxes comes with low fluid but I bought the MT.

Low diff fluid was another one too. Rear brakes, also caliper pad slap in the front. Front shocks making clicking and metal on metal sounds. There have been quite a few all the way down to a pillar dash rattle.

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
Well.. if that one came in the shop there would be at least a dropping of the oil pan to inspect for damage in the bottom end.

    may least where I work.

I don’t know about that, my 89 pickup all tho it was a 4 banger, never had an issue the whole 16 years i owned it. These newer trucks nothing but issues on all newer gens, and I was a mechanic for 40 years, retired now, but for what they cost they should have better quality control.

I assume with more complexity comes more problems and yeah, there have been quality control issues. I wouldn't condemn a whole gen of trucks for it though

Not condemn anything or any gen. It’s an engine, sorry they been making them for years. It’s called quality control for a reason. Please go look up all the TSB On the past 10 years on the Tacoma. There are major issues out of the factory. This should be corrected before we spend our hard earned money. Let’s not get started on the frames, how many years has it affected?

After following this thread I am beginning to second guess my purchase decision. I came from a GMC Canyon, it has also had its share of TSBs and recalls. I was hoping for more reliability.

Every manufacturer screws things up on occasion. I wouldn't worry about it. If I were OP, I'd get them to hand me an extended warranty and be on my way.

All in all, the flakes were in the filter, which is what filters are supposed to do.

Does anyone have a diagram of the oiling system on that engine? I'd love to see where the flakes could have been before they went to the filter.

You could also follow the other threads about people enjoying their trucks with minimal issues. Heck my '16 has managed to duck and dodge every issue and so could yours. Do whatever makes your happy, but these trucks are plenty reliable.
