Makes you wonder how often this goes on across the board. Hidden Repairs and fixes that the end user never really knows about.

Yep. So glad I have a 6MT that doesn't need a trans cooler. Mine is in the affected years otherwise, and has one of the 'bad' radiators. Its been a super reliable vehicle overall though.

I do get lawyer postcards about the SMOD sometimes. Yay class action lawsuits - great for lawyers, not so much for customers.

Same deal though - shit happens and manufacturers will either deny it or fix it, depending on what they think they can afford. I wonder if we'll see more of these engine issues pop up.

Called Toyota, they refuse to give me an extended warranty. Next time I’ll buy a Ford.

Likely the oil filter was loaded enough to cause a significant pressure drop for VVT actuator(s) to operate improperly.

Or maybe the filter got loaded and the particles got washed through the bypass valve?

Or they started in the head, upstream of the vvt?

    Scary possibilities.

Tuning smell, first thought is maybe leaking oil from somewhere, not enough oil pressure to activate the VVT.

Based on that schematic that was posted, if shavings were found anywhere but the heads and oil pan, then it's a good bet the filter was clogged and they went through the bypass, I think.

I had a Ford in the 90s with no issue. Now Chevy, that’s one pile I will never touch again.

lol. We had a 94 thunderbird that was the biggest pile. And a 94 chevy with 225,000 on the original 4l60e.

If I was picking brands based on anecdotes, I'd be walking. Best bet is to find reliability data on individual years and models.

Yep, they tend to hang out here in the 3rd gen forums... :crapstorm:

Which Toyota? The dealer? Toyota North America? Toyota corporate? I'd push a little harder on the issue.

I think the word you are looking for is jackasses. Hahaha. The internet, particularly forums is a fantastic place to find jackasses. It's a digital ocean with access to millions of subtopics and you are bound to find there are plenty of fish in the general sea just waiting to impose their general jackassery on to you.

I am very familiar with those junky Frontiers.. them and Pathfinders of that generation were notorious for that.

    Yeah but that's every manufacturer.

The ONLY Ford I would EVER consider is their Hybrid Fusion model. Toyota had a hand in helping them develop that or their power train off Prius was borrowed (not all of it, but design for sure) for their Fusion model. You literally never see them getting fixed and if you do it's just routine maintenance. They discontinued only the hybrid sub model after a few years because they couldn't get money out of them since they were so well built. Leaving the gas version only even to this date. Just goes to show you where Ford's priority is on building vehicles.
