    Hi guys,

First time poster, long time viewer here

I recently waterlocked my 2rz Tacoma. I hit a pond that was more profound than I thought while I was drifting in a empty parking after a rainy day. The pond itself was maybe 20 to 25 cm deep (less than 10''). The car slowly died, but all the electrics were still working. It would not start back on.

The intake and resonator were flooded. After taking out my spark plugs, I had hope that my engine would be all right as it seemed there was no water in my cylinders. After a whole night of drying, I changed the oil, oil filter, sparks plugs, air filter. I'm still trying to get a hold of the ignition coil connectors.

The car starts now, but the engine is really noisy and makes this supercharged lawnmower sound. I've kind of lost hope for an easy repair.

However, a friend of mine had experienced similar issues on his old Honda Prelude. He said his car was making this crazy lawnmower sound after flood and all he had to do was change the plugs, wires and distributor. So I'm still having some hope and I will try it with the new coil connectors.

Also, the towing guy told me my Timing chain was offset after we tried to start it the first time post-pond. I'm not sure how a 20 cm pond would do that.

I'm a broke student willing to learn. I will do whatever it takes to avoid the garage and get my Taco back on the road

Would any Tacoma expert give me an insight on this? Thanks alot

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Is it throwing any codes? How does he know the timing chain is offset?

I plugged it to a OBDII reader, does not show any codes. Engine check is off too.

The towing guy asked me to start the car ( when it was still soaking wet ). I tried starting it, made some "drowned noise", without success. He told me right off it was my Timing chain. Not sure how he could have known without even hearing the engine.

I've started thinking a broken manifold or something might cause all that noise. It's very very rowdy. I burst my ears trying to figure if the sound was coming from the manifold. It indeed seems like most of the noise is coming from that side of the engine, but it's not conclusive. I did not find any crack on it neither although it seems like one of the manifold bolt is leaking.

I still can't accept the fact that I might have blown my Tacoma with a frigin puddle.

The engine doesn't vibrate blatantly , doesnt seem to be a broken piston.. it's wayyy more loudy.

Maybe the timing is indeed offset and all 4 pistons bang on the valves?

I don't think the timing chain can jump a tooth. It would break before that happened. Even without the timing chain tensioner installed you can't pull the chain off of the cam sprocket. The chain is installed on the sprockets before the cam sprocket is put onto the camshaft. In short, there is not enough slack for it to jump.

A compression check and leak down test would determine whether you blew a piston ring or there's a problem with valves. I'm not sure what it would sound like or how it would run if the piston rods or bearings got damaged. You might want to find some videos showing the sound that these major problems would cause to compare to your sounds.

Agree with DrZ. The towing guy doesn't know what he is talking about. You should pull all your plugs and inspect them. Check all your fuses. Inspect the MAF also. If you were able to get that much water into the motor, which I'm still doubting it had to get passed the MAF. If that thing goes the truck won't run right. You should check the fuses too. I think there is one for the MAF. I can't believe it's not throwing a code

Thanks for taking your time guys, I appreciate.

I will put down my pride and send it to the professionals

I'm checking out on the MAF as we speak

I did inspect all the fuses

I realized the oil from my dipstick is very watery, even after oil change, really should have seen that earlier

It has been dripping since last night

It does sound like an engine that started without oil

Thanks again, I will keep you updated
