'16 Taco, V6 4x4, SR5, Tow package, Inferno, Access Cab, 5K miles (not that much of that matters) :)

Driving home yesterday (100 degree temps), accelerating hard to pass, it starts to buck and jump, check engine and traction off lights come on. Pull over as it sputters and cuts off.

Restarted OK, and the idiot lights are off. Make it about 2 miles, sputtering and lights come back on. Coast into a parking lot as it dies. Will start, but not run. Call Toyota Care, they dispatch tow truck.

Towed to dealer... After a couple of hours, customer service guy says they "think" it is something with the timing pulley, and that they are going to have to keep it, and put me in a Prius C (much rejoicing, there ) rental.

I need to get some stuff out of the truck, and when I do I get a chance to chat with the mechanic. He said he thought that it was the timing pulley or bolt that secured it. And that it was becoming a known issue.

Anybody ever have similar issues, or know anything about it?

    Thanks in Advance!

    Don

Def sounds like a stupid crank sensor. Had it happen on my 05 Tacoma too. Easy fix.

And ignored what? It only has 5K, and was in for it's first service last week. :)

Crankshaft position sensor, another one bites the dust.

I really, really hope that doesn't go out on me when I'm in the middle of a trail way out in the desert. Good lord.

    Four days later...

From the dealer... We are still diagnosing. If it were the crankshaft position sensor, I think they would know by now, would they not?

Did you ask if they've looked at the crank position sensor?

Not yet... My Service advisor doesn't come in for another 2 hours. I asked that they have him call me.

I would think since there's no tsb for this issue that some dealers are better than others about diagnosing the issue.

I'm sure they'll roll their eyes at you when you tell them that you heard about it on a forum.

Yeah, good point. Do you think this is something Toyota would address in a TSB or a recall? Is it the actual CPS or the wiring harness? Sounds like there's been issues with both!

Wonder if I could just take this to an independent mechanic and have them put a new CPS in there?

Would hate for this to happen out in the backcountry...

Well... No call back today. Called in at 9, was told that my Service Advisor came in at 11 today. I asked that he call me, was assured he would.

It's 5, so I call back in, get told that he is with a customer, and that he will call me right back.

So now it's 7:30, and nothing. Who wants to bet that if I call back, I'll get told that he got off at 7?

    Having Taco withdrawals.

This Prius C just ain't cutting it for me.

So finally, I talked to the service advisor. The top half of the engine is disassembled. They think they will have an answer tomorrow. But he did say that the CPS is part of the diagnostic process.

More as it develops... At least the Prius C is getting 55 MPG.
