My 09 taco 4.0L 6 speed manual, wants to keep revving when the clutch is depressed, and let off the gas for several seconds. Is that a common characteristic with these? Also, it doesn't drop below 1100 rpm when hyper mileing unless the AC is on, then it drops to 1000.
I grind 3rd gear whether I'm shifting up, or down, double clutching might help, don't know haven't tried yet.

Your high idle can cause issues like your explaining. Should be around 600.

the shifting in my 07 manual is completely smooth going up or down through every gear. When jamming hard I might miss third now and then but no grinding whatsoever.

Tacoma ECU keeps the idle up while moving to "aid in better shifts". Maybe ask around and find out if that's part of the program for your year. Mine does and it is a 2012.

It's called "rev hang", it's normal, but yours seems a bit high. First thing to do is clean the throttle body, MAF sensor and make sure you have no vacuum leaks.
Lot's of info on both procedures here.

Bleed clutch. Rev hang is normal. Want to get rid of it, get the OVTune when available (if they stop the rev hang), or an aftermarket Stand-alone.

Yep they all do that (rev hang).

I don't notice it much in the 6MT. My 4-cyl 5 speed would actually rev UP shifting from 4th-5th gear.
