    Hello. New member here.

I've been lurking on here for a while now and this place has a wealth of information. Hoping I could get some insight on my possible problem. Sorry to create yet another knocking thread.

I've searched on here for this problem a for a while now and found a lot of threads, but unfortunately I couldn't really find one that had a definite solution or identified the problem.

My 19 SR5 3.5 4X4 seems to have a pretty loud knocking noise coming from the passenger side. It only does it when idiling from what I can tell.

My friend has a 18 TRD OR with not much more miles than mine, and we both get gas at the same gas station. We compared his to mine and on his truck he definitely does not have knocking sound like mine does.

    Here is a video: https://youtu.be/JPeSZlPgf1A

My truck has 1k miles on it. I use Chevron gas.

In your opinion, does this seem normal? I will eventually take it to the dealership but I have had no time right now unfortunately.

    Thanks in advance.

I dont think there is anything wrong. Sounds like mine when idling. I think its just the injector cleaning cycle.

It sounds like a diesel. These v6s have interesting sound wnen idling for sure . Dont think its anything to worry about. See what others say, good luck!

That's what I thought too but I can hear when that cycle kicks in and out, and it's not that knocking sound. Plus like I said, my friends TRD sounds nothing like mine.

Heres a video on it. It's normal.

Edit: guess the video alone doesn't add much info. But the comments/video description provide some info and all say their taco sounds this way.

100% normal. You’ll learn to love the sound.

All direct injection engines make a similar noise. The Tacoma noise changes when the engine enters a valve cleaning cycle.

    Here's the thing I'm wondering about;

If this is going through its cleaning cycle, then at some point it would stop, this goes on the entire time.

Second, my friends truck sounds nothing like mine at all. No knocking at all, and we can both hear when it goes into injector cleaning cycle and it sounds nothing like mine.

I would assume if this was normal, then his engine would have it too. His is quiet as a mouse.

Just my train of thought on this.

    Thanks

Give it another couple thousand miles and it'll be much quieter.

I have a 2018 TRDOR. Sounds similar to mine as well. I wouldn’t describe that as a knock, more of a ticking. You will know a know a knock, and you will know somethings wrong lol

Definitely normal - nothing to worry about. Perhaps yours is a little louder right now bc it’s still breaking in and your friends, being a little older, has smoothed out a bit with age. Mine has somewhat but it’s still there

Your friend probably has different oil in it. You still have break in oil. These motors have this sound. No worries mate. She clicks, clacks, knocks, pings, whispers, growls, and clangs.. just get on it and drive it. It’s under warranty till 60000 miles anyway. By that time you’ll know if it was bad.

Maybe it’s his engine that’s defective? The rest of ours all make the ticking sound.

I’d get your buddy to review his warranty. I think it’s his engine that’s behaving strangely.
