i dealt with this for over 10,000 miles. was pretty bad in the summer. finally started using 91 or better and now the truck drives like it should. it was really bad.

i do have the 2.7 so the loss of power from timing retard was very noticeable. the engine sounded so bad with 87. much quieter, smoother, more power, less gear hunting with 91/93.

it's pretty much running on knock sensors with 87 from the data i've seen. and almost every time i would fill up it would revert back to open loop and start "learning" again which made it worse. you can get a bluetooth OBD adapter and monitor the timing advance with an app and graph all the data from the logs.

Tune can alter injection split and may indirectly affect the cycle. No issues with KDMAX, Nexus.
Get obd2 apps to monitor engine parameters if you have concerns.

is the high pressure fuel pump near the rear of the engine on the passenger side? These pumps can be noisey. Believe thefuel rail is wrapped to reduce noise.

Cleaning cycle cleans the direct injector not the intake valve.

My truck wasn't included in a pump recall, spark plugs are fine when idling it's extremely smooth, don't know about the rest.

I’ve also had significant knocking with my 3.5. 93 octane runs so much better below ~2500 but the cost is terrible.

Retorque your plugs or possibly, torque them correctly for the first time. Mine did the same till I did the plugs at 77k miles. 2 of my plugs were finger tight, TRUELY, finger tight. I still don’t care for the truck as it very non-linear in its power/torque delivery but it is a damn sight better now.

They’re torqued at like 13 ft/lbs which isn’t much more than finger tight! I’m wondering if you guys are getting gas from stations that have a lot of water in their tanks?

Good question but does the tank have a drain plug? Never seen it

Not the truck the gas station. When I lived in Oregon, I was led to believe that the cheaper gas was cheap because they had lower standards on the amount of water allowed in their actual gas tanks at the gas station. Certain brands would always mess our work trucks up. Never had an issue if I ran Shell or Chevron. I stick to shell here in Michigan. Or maybe you guys are living in places where there is high humidity?

I agree with 89 octane. Toyotas like it better than regular.

I run 100% fuel every other fill up from Weigels.

    It cost $4.29 per gallon....
I still get a light pecking sound when idoling..I was told buy the dealer that it's the high pressure fuel system...I have listened to at least 30 3rd gen Tacomas around my area they all have that sound...I think it's normal for these trucks.

you would not normally hear knock at idle. Hot temps under load is when you would hear it. Or during “tip-in” as the op described. The engine absolutely runs better on premium fuel. High compression engine.

Exactly u got the idea, under load, what's the solution? Premium? Money apart manufacturer stated that regular should do just fine. Need to figure this out, truck almost new, paid off it's driving me crazy it suppose to be just fine

Run a bottle of good fuel injector cleaner to help clear up any potential carbon and run at least midgrade fuel. I only run premium / 93 octane. It’s very obvious when you monitor the knock sensors how this truck reacts to fuel. BG44k or my favorite is Redline S1 with a tank of premium fuel.

I run the Lucas cleaner every oil change ~4kmiles added to a full tank and refuel at the next half tank. If I’m driving across country I use a bottle every other fill up. Never had an injector or sensor issue in any car. No knocking either. 91 or 93 gives that extra “umph” for the cost of a large Starbucks at the pump. These trucks like dry air, and when it’s hotter and dry your mpg’s should be greater than in colder weather, especially wet or high humidity, damp.
