i had to get a new gas cap and I tried a Napa store and my engine light turned on. I should say I drove without a cap for a day cause my original was stolen. I finally ordered the Tacoma gas cap, put it on, but engine light is still on.
    Is this a big deal?

You can try disconnecting the negative terminal on the battery for a few minutes.

Or maybe have the code cleared and see what happens.

...or you could go have the code read and know what’s wrong and fix it.

It may take upto five or six on off cycles to turn off on its own.

The gas cap being unplugged causes an error code that triggers the light.

On 4Runners, the whole dash lights up like a damn Christmas tree if you don't turn it till it clicks.

I thought you had to reset the light in order to shut it off, it won’t turn off on its own

Usually the gas cap will throw a p0456 code. And usually the tracks light comes on also. If you replace the gas cap with a new one it can take a week for the code to clear. And while were on the subject of gas dont push every little drop you can in the tank it can f*#k up the evap canister and thats over $300

You need a reader for instant code clearing. It may take a few hundred miles before it clears on its own.
