I'm curious to know why some of these 3.5's are louder with that noise than others.

Because "normal" or "louder" are super subjective. Its why the entire thread has already diagnosed/misdiagnosed OP's problem.

    It's normal.

I don't give a crap if you build space ships for a living. I never once said it was injector noise and before you go implying someone else is an idiot, maybe stop and reflect on yourself for a bit.

But please, go ahead and tear your truck apart proving the internet wrong.

For 38 years before I got a clean job with the PD I worked on mostly exotic's from a simple XKE's etc. on up, most had shim valve engines the adjustment is a shim on top of a bucket Toyota is no different. They are dimensional each one is a different size for each valve clearance yes some maybe the same, but the only way to adjust is measure and replace with the proper thickness. So bottom line you are guessing unless you check clearance. Left alone it does not fix it's self. These OVH cams are all a bit noisy but they don't knock unless some thing is broken, if you have a distinct single noise with a noisy valve it will only get worse. Do not throw money at it find out where the noise is first.

    It's fascinating to watch...
I don't understand the dismissive attitudes.

IMO, there's something going on with the passenger side on some of these engines. Enough examples have been posted in the past six years to warrant further exploration. How common or widespread, is the only thing up for debate.

ETA: For the record, I've never heard any kind of 'ticking' from mine; nor have I never noticed the cleaning cycle.:notsure:

Mine is making the same exact noise. Did you find out what it was? I just changed the purge valve thinking that was it but it's still ticking like that.

That tapping is not normal. I've had my truck for 5 years now and I'm hearing the same noise

But they are louder. I've heard a few of these 3.5's, some you could walk right up to them and not notice it. Others sound like a diesel, or have bad lifters.

I even noticed a tapping sound on the passenger side of mine when mailing a letter the other day. Its more noticeable with the ac on idling. Reminds me back in the day when gm had those 6 cyl. overhead cam engines in their pontiac lemans.

I only notice it on some trucks when their idling like mine, with the the ac on it seems more noticeable. Other tacoma 3.5's i've heard sound like something is ready to fail.

Mine started making a new loud ticking sound about 5k mi ago. It is on the passenger side, only seems to happen below 1500rpm and is not constant. To be clear the truck has 165k mi and I am fully aware of all its usual sounds. Hopefully someone can shed some light on what it could be. I would be pretty bummed if my 4th Tacoma doesnt go 300k + miles like the other 3.

You are right, it is valve train noise. The the high pressure fuel pump is cam driven and in the passenger side valve cover. It is very loud, but normal. My truck is at 100k and made that noise of day one. If its gonna blow a head it sure is taking its time. Wouldn't recommend going up in oil weight on a VVTi engine, a tech with your experience should know better.

I think the OP made a point about what it could be. The grammar and misspelling could be overlooked but it is distracting. I’m NOT a tech, and I’ve read plenty about everyone saying it’s normal. I do work in a place where I have to do mechanical work so I am no fool to engines and whatnot. However, I have a ‘21 TRD sport with a round 55,000 mi. and it’s making the sewing machine sound in the cab. My wife asked me if that’s normal. If my wife can hear something and bother to process it as a possible concern then it’s an obvious noise.
Furthermore I do happen to be a drummer. I measured the tapping noise to be about 320 BPM. The tach reads about 500 at idle when we warm. In my experience this sound is more prevalent when fully warm and seems to get louder the more I drive. It is not as noticeable as the engine gains revs but always comes back when idling. BPM on a metronome is much slower than 500. So, either my tach is off or there is some variation to the source of the clatter.
There are a few YouTube videos that show a good example of what I hear. But it does sound like my grandma using a sewing machine in a closet.
