Could it be the valves not adjusted properly? (manual valve lash with shims, not hydraulic)

From what i've read on TW is the injectors do a self cleaning cycle every now and then which causes this noise.

Yup. 2017 TRD sport. 1300 miles. Same chatter under the hood. Told that since it's an Atkinson and has self cleaning injectors, that's what you get. Don't like it. My 2014 4.0 didn't have any of that but then again it was a different type of motor.

Sounds like every VW I've ever owned (96 and older) when idling. Otherwise it sounds fine. 6500km so far.

My TDI did and thanks VW for the $24k buyback so I could move from the SportWagen to the Tacoma. Yes I feel a little guilty pressing the pedal down to get it to move but I am sure I will get used to the loss of torque from the diesel.

As i understant it. It sounds like the self cleaning innector cycle, it can take up to 10 minutes but can only run at idle. So it can do it for 10x 1min cycles, while your at lights / startup etc. If you want to get rid of it, let it idle until it stops, then you shouldn't here it again until the next clean cycle.

If it starts chirping, get the high pressure fuel pump replaced

What's the point? It comes right back if you're using ethanol fuel.

Fyi mine makes this exact sound. Brought it in to the dealer and asked to hear new trucks off the lot at warm idle. Service manager calls me into the sbop and i see my truck and 2 other new trucks from the lot next to mine with the hoods open and idling. Mine and the two new ones all idling and all making the same tapping noise. I was satisfied with it being called normal after that and now it doesn't bother me any more. Hope this helps

It's the high pressure fuel pump that sits on the top of the engine. It has a mechanical lifter that makes that clatter noise that you're hearing.

I've checked many Tacoma for this noise due to my paranoia and it apparently is perfectly normal, as I've heard it on all of them, brand new on the lot.

It really doesn't sound that bad. Have you heard the 4.0 liters?

Do you need to know, or care?
Bad ass Toyota Diesel engine with self cleaning spark plugs and DTS technology (Diesel Tapping Sparkplugs), gotta love these trucks. Or maybe just injector cleaning, IDK, but dealer says normal.
