I bought my truck July 9th with 32,300 miles, it started making a ticking noise took it in to Jeff Hunter here in Waco. First the guy told me these Tacoma's lifter make a loud noise all the time,
I wanted to make sure. Needless to say they kept it for 5 days there was a vacuum pump out in the engine and the rear drums had to be replaced. I am hearing a loud engine noise again and vibration when idling. My rep told me that is normal, I think I need a 2nd opinion! Any one else have any ideas?

The injectors enter a cleaning cycle at idle and can be kinda noisy.

I will, later this weekend. It makes me nervous, I am familiar with engine knocks and lifters tapping. My Dad is a ASE Certified mechanic of 48 yrs. I havent had him listen to it yet though

It is almost a shake when idling! The noise is constant during running and idling almost like a knock. I am just worried!

Part of the reason I traded in my v6. Too much noise coming from under the hood.

Same thing mine is doing. I bought my 2018 3 weeks with 9k miles on the odometer. It was CPO (certified) and the 100k/10 yr started the day I signed the deal. I am not a bit worried about it at this point. Considering the engine is Atkinson cycle, I would suspect that it attributes to the oddness of the idle and shut down shake. The noise in the valve train could possible the the cams drive chain. BTW, this is the very first Toyota in our family. I was a Ford guy, had a hard pass on the new Ranger. Not for me.

Direct injection could be the source of the tick you are hearing. Loader than valve train and chain noise.

The 1GR in the 2nd gen was worse - the bucket valve lifters chattered like a diesel.

My 2016 has noisy days as well. The sound varies with outside temp.

This Texas heat may have something to do with it. The truck came from Tavernier Key, Florida it should be used to the heat and humidity lol

The oil viscosity is higher at lower temperature. That affects the normal ticking of lifters at cold start. Cooler == quieter.

Mine ticks, but not after the engine has done work and pumped oil everywhere.

If it kept clicking, I wouldn't think twice about it, but if that turned into a clacking, I'd get Toyota involved.
