Next time you change your oil, put in 3qts, then add a little at a time to get to the "low" mark. Write down how much required. Repeat until filled to the "full" mark. I think you'll find it is more than a quart.

In the 2015 owners manual, page 410, it plainly states that 1.6 quarts are needed when level shows low on the dipstick.

Thanks -- bought the truck used. Unfortunately no manual. i find that most manuals are useless so I never worried about it.

    Manuals worthless? How?

I sure wouldn't buy a vehicle from anyone that couldn't produce the manual. Doesn't say much about their organization skills, and likely maintenance skills.

everyone has their own criteria, manuals are not part of what I look for in a vehicle. If I want info on a given vehicle i get a service book or spend time on the forum. I go by the condition of the vehicle and since it was a pre-owned certified vehicle that came with a Toyota extended warranty for 100K mile the manual was that last thing on my mind. If you think the manual is so important and its an integral part of the ownership experience then more power to you.

I suppose I'd agree with pre-owned certified through Toyota, surprised they didn't round you up a manual though.

Dont get me wrong -- depending on the manufacturer the manual is sometimes nice to have. Problem is that it takes up too much space in the glove box so out it goes. Ive also been burned on manuals. Ive seen where the manufacturer makes a change and doesn't bother to make the change in the manual to reflect the new reality. Sometimes they are important changes. Even the dealers find out after the fact and dont get a reason why. For example like what I seen with a new Chebbie siliverdo 1500 and the oil capacities. they changed and the old number is still in the manual. Its a new truck and there are no recalls on manuals. Ive seen it happen before in other ways too and not in a good way. Or simply put they make a crappy manual. Seems Toyota puts out a decent manual.

I have an updated manual sent to me by Toyota around 7 years ago for my 2005, gotta like that. I keep mine handy in a file cabinet Tacoma file sleeve.

So they did make an up-dated manual. I am sure its minor stuff. I have the online one now so no big deal. Really all I would use the manual for is for fluid recommendations and capacities but all that is readily available online. Ive had the truck for over 100K on top of the original miles so not much that would be in the manual that I dont know about the truck. The question I was asking isnt something someone would normally be concerned with so more than likely in most manuals it wouldn't be listed. Its a unique situation that prompted me to ask the question. Not something that will likely happen in the future.
