Engine oil drain plug WTF!

    Well I had my 6 mo BS free service, only 2500mi but wanted to change the oil and I know, waisting money etc.....but I got couple cases of Mobile 1 from Costco cheap and the Aluminum Toyota oil filter cover so I decided to do it. Well I drained oil, plug was a little more than hand tight, then the gasket was smashed on the oil pan, couldn't come off, tried a flat screwdriver, ended up scraping it off with a razor blade! Pan surface was dinged from screwdriver so I filed it flat and put a new gasket, OEM, and finished the oil change.
    Is that how the gasket is every time? And I tried to take off the rear half of the skid plate/pan, to file the gasket surface and the damn bolts was so freaking hard thought it was going to break, so I retightend it and that was a bitch. Going to have the dealer remove the bolts at next service!

    Anyway, the oil was pretty dark, almost black, the filter was black with metal shavings between each fin! I'm glad I did the oil change, I'm doing it every 6mos, retired and don't put on that much mileage and very little off road, and it won't break the bank!
    I should have taken pics but just wanted to know if that's how the drain gasket is every time you change oil? I wonder if dealer changes the gasket when they do it!
    Thanks for letting me vent....let me know if anyone else had this gasket problem.

    i changed mine a couple of weeks ago, the last time it was changed at the dealer, the 24 month free change. when i changed it same thing the washer was flattened into the metal on the pan and could not remove it. i just left it there a put on a new washer, will see how it looks the next time i change the oil. and yea, the drain plug had been over tightened and took more than the usual muscle to break loose.

    must be a hawaii thing...does your costco sell 0-10W on maui i also get at costco but is 0-20W do not think it matters no freezing winters here. aloha

    Working now a list
    I tried using a dab of grease and also oil but it sticks evenly time.

    I use a plastic scraper to remove it and bought a bad of gaskets from Amazon so I use a new one each time.

    I don't remember this being a problem for me but now you have me wondering if I just didn't realize there was a gasket! At any rate, I put on a fumoto drain valve and it's not leaking so I'll just give it a check next change.

    gasket should not be that tough to remove. i've changed my oil several times. i suspect tech is using his little 3/8 impact to tighten the plug. yes, the skid plate is a pain.

    The color of oil is NOT indicative of the condition of the oil.

    If you put fresh oil in your truck, drove around for 20-30 miles and changed it again.... it would be black. Oil is exposed to engine combustion and will turn black from carbon.

    I have to use a flat head screw driver each time I change my oil to scrape the gasket off because it adheres pretty good. But not so bad I damage my oil pan trying to remove it.

    I'm willing to bet the dealer has not been changing your gasket when you take it to them.
    Which is why you should never take your truck to the dealer LOL even for "free" Toyota Care.

    I brought my truck in for the 6 month / 8000km change which doesn't include an oil change. I was going to pay for the oil change anyway just as the "first" one instead of waiting for the 12 month / 16,000km. But the dealership just did the Number 2 service which includes an oil change and cost me nothing .

    My guess is they never changed your oil at 2500 miles.

    I went with the F103N,no complaints the lack of mess it worth it. So used to having my hands covered in motor oil for years it’s almost doesn’t feel like an oil change any more. http://www.fumotooildrainvalve.com/f103n.html

    Nothing unusual about finding a bit of metal in your filter. The difference is, with the exposed media of a cartridge filter you can actually see what's in it. It's always been there....you just couldn't see with a spin-on can filter.

    The metal wasn't floating around the engine. It was in the filter where it belongs

    A few OE parts from fancy trucks
    Not sure what all the obsession is about replacing gaskets at each change??

    My '04 (last new purchase) with 120k and over a dozen changes is still on the OE gasket.

    No drips, no runs, no errors.

    Now that I think about it, while I have an assortment of such gaskets on hand, I've only had to use/replace one probably 6 times over 50+ vehicles in several decades of driving/self service. And those replacements were on used cars and my first change on them. And only if the pan was wet in the plug area prior to the change.

    I’ve been wondering the same thing. I changed the drain plug and gasket ONCE on my ‘97 F150 in roughly 240k miles. Same for my wife’s ‘02 Liberty that went over 300k. Both times they were replaced only because the drain plug threads were getting a bit rough. Oil was changed in both every 5k religiously.

    I had the same issue when I changed the oil at 5,000 miles (so it was like that from the factory) - I ended up leaving it alone because I didn't want to wreck the pan. I assume that the dealer was able to get it off and replace it at the 10k change. Or, maybe they just leave it there as well.

    According to my Toyotacare guide the first oil change is at 10,000 miles. And the first scheduled service is at 5,000 miles.

    Does anyone know if the longer Fumoto valve has enough clearance for use with a Mobtown skid?
