So I was filling oil today and my hand bumped and I spilled oil on the engine (area around the oil reservoir).

wiped up a bit and sprayed engine degreaser and gave it a spray with the hose. Let it air dry for like an hour in my driveway.

Went to start it and immediately got light smoke coming from exhaust manifold area, I assumed it might be some oil burning on the hot parts.
Maybe it was just water evaporating? I shut the engine off right away and tried again 30 minutes later, same deal.

It’s just sitting in my driveway, any ideas what to do? Should I just hit it with degreaser and the hose again? The smoke is coming from under the heat around the manifold so it might be tough to clean that out.

I know I’m a dumbass and it’s not even Friday! Trying to tell myself just to relax.

2021 SR5 just for the record.

We’ve all done it, burn it off. Whatever doesn’t burn off will prevent rust for months to come.

+1 on the burnoff. Been their done that when I was younger and actually changed my own oil. Admittedly that was in the days of round air filters and changing points, but still....:anonymous:

Brake cleaner on cold engine just douche it. It will down down and it dries instantly . Get Walmarts brand, it'll save you some coin. And in the future , when you do your next oil change, use it to get the residual off the pan etc.

Should I be worried about brake cleaner near the rubber and plastic? I know the oil filter is plastic too.

I use the Walmart one , and non chlorinated brake cleaner for auto zone also.Which ever I can get my hands on. I wouldn't worry about too much.

I once had our cat knock over a qt of oil over the engine when i was doing an oil change on the tundra. I just took the garden hose, and sprayed it away best as possible. I looked at it this way...i had some rust protection. Any remaining oil flim will just smoke and burn away.

At long as it’s not a huge smoke ball it should be normal. But if I was you I would be posting the same question so I see where your concern is

Oil on a hot exhaust manifold always puts on a show! And few (that change their own oil) can say this has never happened to them! Don't sweat it, it'll burn off.
