I have a question about engine oil.
I have 2013 4.0 4x4 trying to find a oil brand that stays in the engine and doesn't seem to go out the tailpipe. There is NO leaks I have checked and checked and checked. I'll change my oil and make sure its full. About 1k miles I'll be 2 to 2 1/2 quarts low. I'll re-add same thing. What engine oil do you use and have you noticed the same thing.

How many miles on your truck? If it’s burning oil your can try a high mileage oil. Helps minimize leaks to a point. Try changing the pcv.

If you've got no external leaks... sounds like a valve or ring problem. Any smoke from tail pipe?

Have a friend drive behind you to confirm that you're not burning it. It might be just faint enough where you can't see it from the rear view mirror, because it mixes with the outside air enough to dilute the smoke.

    PCV faulty or clogged?

A better question is what kind of oil are you using so we can stay away from it.

edit: I did have a motorcycle once that had this problem and was not common AT ALL to others with the same model.

I got rid of it. It was competently diagnosed to rings that never sealed in 1 cylinder.

Burning 2+ quarts of oil per 1,000 miles sounds like an awful lot to not see it at the tailpipe. o_O

I know. I'm just trying to think of anything at all that might help. Scratching my head.

He's insisting there's no leaks and none out the tail pipe. l believe he's checked. But just seems so unlikely that one would loose that much oil without a telltale sign somewhere. :notsure:

Is everything else up to date maintenance wise? All filters are replaced per the service schedule, etc?

Have you ever had any previous engine damage or harsh events like driving in really dusty areas without the air filter in place? (or worse - are you using a "performance" air filter that maybe didn't catch fine debris?)

    Start with the basics .
Do a compression test so you have a baseline reading.

I'm not sure how long this has been happening but I would be surprised if you did not have a check engine if it was burning. You should have poisoned the catalytic converters by now. The check engine light does work? You may have a running leak, better start looking. My '13 doesn't use a drop at 61k,5w-30 synthetic oil and Toyota filter every 5000 miles.

Look at your radiator cap and overflow bottle for signs of oil.You may have a leaking head gasket.See if the exhaust smells sweet like coolant.

No signs of oil in radiator or reservoir.
    Exhaust dont smell sweet.
I would say it's more recent that I have noticed.
Like the last 30k miles. Air filter and oil filter are clean I change oil and filter every 5k and air every 2.5k due to the dry dust conditions I live and drive in. Sometimes more.

I have tried. 5w30 each one of these varied from 1 to 2.5 list beginning worse to better.

I guess a compression test dry and wet will be the next step. It's probably too late now but I wonder if a used oil analysis would show lots of silica in the oil from dust in the intake air. You are certainly in severe duty territory if you have that much dust in the air.

    Welcome to southern NEw Mexico.
I am gonna attach a gopro at the wheel well aimed at the exhaust to see if I can see any white smoke.
Just to get a closer look because i am unable to see it while driving. I'll have a friend rev up the engine while I stand by the exhaust and smell it to see and do a compression test. (But if I still have good enough power to tow 5k+ trailer) idk
