I've been using conventional oil in my 2007 4.0L Tacoma for its whole life. Now finding conventional oil that isn't some cheap ass store brand has gotten next to impossible. I got a synthetic blend. My question: Is this OK to use? Also, I've never paid much attention to conventional vs. synthetic oil. Any insight as to what the difference is an which is preferable. Thanks.

I always use synthetic oil through out the truck
    Diffs, tranny, motor, etc
Conventional oil, I use for lawn equip :) it’s old school in my eyes

Synthetic may be more $$$$, but less viscosity break down, which in turn 5K per oil change routine

Conventional, full synthetic, or blends - they are all fine in the 4.0. The critically important thing is regular oil change intervals.

Nothing else much needs to be said. If you want hours of free entertainment go read Bob Is The Oil Guy site and fall down the rabbit hole of motor oil madness.

Edit: I spoke too soon - see below posts. Make sure it is API certified at minimum and use Toyota OE filter.

As long as it has this type of marking on the bottle or jug, you are buying good oil. No need to go any further on this discussion because oil threads always turn into a dumpster fire, but I would hope we can all agree that API Certified is the bare minimum for oil.

Walmart still has Supertech in conventional. I run their synthetic in all my vehicles.

The “conventional” you’ve been using is a synthetic blend in all but name.

You can get great deals on conventional oil at the Dollar Store. Especially after holidays and such. I scored a great deal recently on this Mobil stuff because they are fazing out their fall products.

Second this statement. You would need to be a chemist to participate in any discussion that would go beyond this. You’d also need to be a masochist. Because it’s painful.

I would recommend OEM Toyota oil filter regardless of what oil you decide to go with.

I use synthetic as well throughout my truck but I was on East Coast gear supply and they recommend regular oil in diffs over synthetic.

I did use conventional in my 08 4Runner but it’s fine to run synthetic. I would still get recommended weight - not 0w20. However that’s what my 13’ Tacoma 2.7 calls for.
