Hey my name is Jesse. I'm new to this Tacoma forum. I have a 2006 Toyota Tacoma 2.7 l 5 speed with 391,000 MI. I have been wanting to do a engine rebuild but I don't know if it's safe on the engine from what I have read on it's a cast iron block but I cannot be sure. I just need some advice on whether or not to do a rebuild or not.

    Own a magnet?

Why do you think it needs rebuilding? IE what testing have you done?

It's got a small oil leak and I love the truck, I'm gonna have to replace clutch soon maybe it's been like 10 years on this one. The most dependable one I've owned. I wanna rebuild from ground up and make it as close to new that I can. I bought the truck for 100 dollars and drove it away in 2018.

Rear seal which from what I'm told is normal with that many miles. I have also had to put two valve cover gaskets on it since 2018 so I feel like the heads could be a little warped but the only way to find out to tear it down. I've gotten that far I've just never gotten below it but I have a mechanic that builds race motors so he said he would help me if I wanted him to. I will not be making a race motor out of it. All I want to do is rebuild it from the ground up as a project cuz I love this truck. I just need to know if it's reasonable to do it.

Only three questions need to be answered to answer the question, "Is it reasonable..."

    1. Does it need a rebuild?
    2. Can it be rebuilt?
    3. Would you like to rebuild it?

Answer those questions and you'll know if it's reasonable.

How much of a leak are we talking? Valve cover gaskets go more often if you have a bad PCB valve.

Yes you can rebuild them and for reasonable if you use factory style components and don’t upgrade the rods or pistons.

I just dropped off my 2TR block at the machine shop this week with +.020” pistons.

if it was me, I’d just do a rear main seal whenever you have the trans out to do the clutch and call it a day.

    yeah, this
While not very powerful, those motors are bulletproof as long as you don’t overheat them

This was going to be my reply.^^^^^

This assumes you have good compression numbers and leak down testing is fine.

If those things are good, no reason for a rebuild at this point.

Make sure the cooling system is up to snuff.
Refresh all system fluids that are due, have never been done or you don't have record of
Work on replacing all rubber suspension and body bushings to 'really' refresh the truck in terms of noise and ride, (I'm assuming the big things of springs and shocks are in good order)

You need to answer a lot of basic engine health questions such as compression, etc...Are you going to rebuild it ? If not who and cost ?
