Hello, I'm new to the forum as I recently purchased my first taco. 97 single cab 5spd 2.4. Anyways, I picked it up for cheap knowing it needed some work. After pulling the valve cover off, I saw that the bolt holding the sprocket on the intake cam was sheared, as well as the key on the cam that the sprocket slides on to.

I have had trouble finding out whether or not this is an interference engine, but I don't see why the bolt and key would have broken unless some kind of unwanted contact was made. I now have the head pulled off but am unsure whether I should replace the head/valves/cams and other small/related parts and use the same block, OR just replace the engine entirely and not have to worry about anything going wrong related to the block.

Anyone have any idea what could have been the cause of this or suggestions on what I should do? Any help is appreciated, thanks guys.

They are an interference engine on the 2.4 and 2.7 engines. No need to replace the head or block unless there is damage there. I would have the head inspected, and most likely replace all of the valves, then have the pistons and rods inspected and go from there. Then you can decide if you should repair or replace.
