engine rev when tapping brake going downhill

    hello there
    new member and I apologize already if there is an answer to this, but couldn't find any in my searches.
    I have a 2012 double cab toyota tacoma, v6. When I'm going downhill, if I tap on the brakes at about 40 - 45mph the engine revs up to around 2000rpm - it's pretty much like it's downshifting. If I tap on the gas it revs even higher before it settles back down.
    Not a total "truck-gal" yet but I'm learning so be kind ;) but wanting to make sure I don't have an engine problem.

    That should be the downhill assist so you arent wearing out your breaks trying to slow the truck down so the engine downshifts to compensate.

    No engine problems to worry about... Don't feel bad though, I thought it was strange when I first got the truck and didn't know the computer was doing it on purpose.

    Neg. DAC is a 4x4-only feature for off-road. You press the DAC button on the dash and the truck crawls down steep grades at a more or less constant speed.

    What the OP is seeing is the transmission downshifting to slow the truck down, and is simply part of the ECM shift logic. For trucks, downshifting and using engine braking to control your speed when going downhill is the safe method, because you can't burn up your brakes, lock up your wheels or swing the tail out. No difference in fuel economy because your foot is off the gas. The Chevy 2500 and 3500 trucks with the Allison tranny had the blip-brakes-to-downshift feature as early as the mid-1990s.

    With bigger trucks carrying heavier loads it becomes increasingly more critical to use engine braking. A fully-loaded 18-wheeler going down a steep hill will crash if not in the right gear at the top of the descent.

    I heard if you remove the CPU, which is located on the passenger's kick panel, it will let your truck roll without any engine braking.

    OK, that's what I thought because I don't have a DAC button on my dash...but I get the transmission shifting on down hills quite often, which bugs me so I'll usually shift into 4th and back to drive and it goes back to normal

    EDIT: How high is "high" for you? I see typically about 3000 rpm when engine braking.

    The truck will down shift into 4th when I apply the brakes but it'll rarely shift back to drive, unless I hit a flat portion of the road and engine load goes back down...if that makes any sense
