    It'll rev to just over 2000, but sometimes more depending on how fast I'm going when I start to apply brakes.

    5th gear is an overdrive ratio (i.e. < 1:1). Really no need to use it unless you are over 60 mph on the highway.

    I just stick into drive and go...automatic transmission. When I had a manual transmission, I rarely used 5th gear in town.

    Slap it into neutral on the hill and it won't rev up :D

    Ride the brakes in neutral , there's the answer

    Why does everyone get so worked up over engine braking , it works great in hilly areas

    I bought a used 2008 2WD V6 Auto and noticed the engine braking immediately, still don't like it after putting 5K miles on it and I wish I could switch it on/off. I've noticed sometimes when starting off the line, the transmission will lurch/clunk if I start too quickly, then let off so I don't hit the person that slowed down in front of me. It's like the transmission can't make up it's mind. Very unsettling and it happens fast. Has anyone else experienced this behavior?:confused:

    Story time::D
    Both my wife and daughter drive it also and I've noticed a negative effect of bad braking behavior, learned by driving the Taco. When they drive our Honda Accord or Ford Excursion as well, they now inherently brake really late expecting engine braking to assist. Forgive my stereo-type reference, but my girls are not going to consciously think about the difference in car characteristics, it's just a metal enclosure with wheels and doors. And there's the quandary, right; They won't be aware of how much the Taco is helping so they don't swing the tail-end around on a twisty wet road, however out of habit they drive the 8,000lbs Excursion like it will stop as well as the Taco.

    I have this feature on our Excursion, but it's switchable and I love it for that. Especially when towing our 10k lbs trailer. Sometimes during emergency braking on a downhill I'll hit the button on the end of the gear selector and it's useful there too, but I drive any vehicle like its a machine.

    I don't much care for this feature while driving downhill in snow and ice conditions. It seems like there should be a switch to disable it temporarily, much like traction control in many vehicles today.

    ENGINE BREAKING and harsh downshifting .
    For you guys with higher mileage ....Read this http://www.sonnax.com/parts/1778
    Page 33 and 34 of this PDF explains downshifting
    http://www.toyotatundraforum.com/pdf/A750E.pdf
    Are you effected by the TSB ? http://www.pdf-archive.com/2012/01/0...sb-0373-09.pdf
    beleive it or not , your truck is designed to save fuel when coasting . When you take your foot off the gas , the PCM tells the injectors to turn off . This is why your truck feels like its slowing down in comparison to older vehicles you have owned . Combine this with the converter remaining locked up and the transmission downshifting while going down hills can really be felt in the drivers seat .

    I really dont like the feature, it seems as if it shifts right when i hitting the brake, and my wife thinks im "brake-checking" her, and im really not. But if i dont hit the brakes, it seems like it doesnt do it, but if i dont hit my brakes, i will hit the guy in front of me. I wish there was someway to turn that feature off, unless you were towing.

    Sometimes when I'm rolling slowly, 20 mph or less, the transmission will slam into first gear when I start accelerating. Barely pressing the throttle I might add. I called Toyota about getting my ECM updated from the TSB posted above but no luck. Would that Sonnax part listed above help that problem or is that only for 3-2 while going downhill? Thanks as always.
