I wife just got a 2019 Tacoma Off Road the first part of the month. Has anyone else noticed when backing up, that when you first start the truck the RPMs are higher before you put your foot on the brake. Then when you let your foot off the brake the engine RPMs seem to raise a little and when you brake again they go down?

I don't get to drive the truck other than Sundays to go to church, so it might just be me.

I’ve definitely experienced the RPMs go up and down when I reverse after a cold start. It doesn’t even seem to be connected to depressing the brake pedal. It seems to flutter up and down regardless at times.

I'm guessing putting your foot on the brakes is putting a load on the engine and releasing the brakes takes the load off causing the rpm spike before idle speed returns to normal.

May be a vacuum leak in the brake booster.

I don’t think the off road is vacuum assisted

    ABS accumulator?

Wow. Just checked. No booster! Gotta catch up. Nice accumulator.

Normal, its trying to warm the cat's up and recharge the battery.

Also reverse is hard due to the nature of an off set bevel differential. It takes more torque than the forward gears.

At least it isn't me :) Maybe I need to let it idle a little before backing out of the garage. Thanks for everyone's replies.

Mine does it too with or without the brake pushed. It surges just a little when first started and backing out of the garage.

I got to drive the truck tonight when the wife got home, so it was already warmed up and I didn't notice the RPMs changing.

    Thanks for everyone's replies.
