Pretty sure that doesn't work on first gens. I got it to work on my '17 4Runner, though.

In my previous reply I forgot the possible source of heat are the exhaust manifold or an exhaust leak heating the hood. Is the exhaust manifold heat shield installed and no exhaust leaks?

I just went through the same shit with my truck. Got it fixed yesterday. My problem was the radiator. It didn't "look" bad but I guess there was enough buildup on the inside. There is some good info from people on the thread I started for my issues. Check it out if you like. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/idles-cool-but-overheats-at-speed-help.554806/

04' is the year, and the codes are on here somewhere...
This...is...me. Looks like a new radiator is in store.

Today it's 93 degrees here in Indiana - My '02 Tacoma w/ 2.7 runs @ 186 Water/Coolant Temp on my Scangauge II with the stock temp water/coolant gauge reading right in the middle as it always does - hope this may help you out. 1st gens. don't have trans or oil temp reading capabilities.

I was worried about this yesterday just over thinking. Have a 2007 Tacoma with a 2tr 4cyl
Just installed low mile engine in it everything is running great temp garage shows normal but the top of the head is hot to touch if I touch the exposed surfaces that protrude out further then the valve cover itself. But it’s going to be hot read on google should be able to hold hand on it but I don’t think that is true

There are 2 temperature sensors on Tacomas. One of them has a single wire and is for the dash gauge, the second is a 2 wire unit and that is for the engine computer. All scan tools read what the engine computer sees, not what the dash is showing.

Yeah I’ll get a scan gauge and be sure to feel more comfortable I think all is ok just over worrying. Rest of engine isn’t as hot. Just exposed parts of cylinder on pass side
