Hi all. Just purchased a 2012 Tacoma from an individual after having been Tacomaless for over 10 years. Brought it home last night and my wife drove it and she says the engine seems loud. She tends to be a little more paranoid than me but I have to admit she's right. No funny knocks or taps, just loud. If anyone has any thoughts they would share I'd appreciate it.

Check the secondary air filter behind the primary. Not a bad thing if it is missing, but your engine will sound louder.

    Hey Howie, :)

    Just tell her it's a truck. ;)

At cold startup, the 2.7 is especially loud because of the emissions air pump. It forces oxygenated air into the exhaust manifold so that combustion continues to take place outside of the cylinders. That added heat fires up the catalytic converter quicker for better emissions. You can tell when it shuts down after a few minutes as the engine gets a little quieter.

And welcome to the forum...

My 05 2.7l sounded like an airplane running down the Tarmac on warm up but after 5 mins she had a nice growl, now my 12 4.0l sounds just mean as hell on warm up but she calms down to nice rubble after, but get on the throttle and she'll clear her throat

It will most definitely sound loud/weird to a truck noob. Compared to the corolla i had my truck sounds loud and rickety.....but i love it.
