So what is the ending? Jiffy filled the tranny? Never filled the oil?

Yeah she answered that a few pages back and said her truck has a distinctive bed liner or something so she is sure it was her truck in the video.

Haven't figured it out yet. My mechanic is off for the Labor Day weekend. Plan to share some of the ideas from this thread with him on Tuesday. I will update if we learn anything new. Thanks everyone for the help!

From a legal standpoint it could certainly be suggested that their failure to complete the other checkpoints could be indicative of the attention to detail with the oil change itself.

Drainplug and washer definitely look suspect and as someone else mentioned previously, are the washer & plug correct and correctly installed? And why was it not noted in the service comments? Suspicious…

seems the most likely scenario is that the barrel burped out a bit of oil before emptying out, causing a small amount of oil that burned/broke down over the course of your travels. If the dipstick check was not clearly “remove, wipe, reinsert, remove to check, and reinsert” then they would’ve missed the error. Not to mention, way too many people involved.

I used to manage a Walmart that had a service shop. Standard procedure was 1 tech in the pit doing the drain plug & filter, 2nd tech topside doing the fill & level check, the Service Mgr/Supervisor was required to be a secondary check for oil level and sign off before closing the ticket. Whenever there was an issue with a pre-existing leak, road damage, or damaged/cross-threaded plug the tech was required to report those issues prior to removing the plug or beginning any work on the vehicle. Obviously auto service isn’t WMs primary business so I’d like to think that a company that “specializes” in those services would have a consistent routine in place.

I had a friend who lost a motor to jiffy lube some years back because of a similar issue but her claim was denied based on the fact that she was “street racing” (a stock Honda civic with window tint and a fart can muffler).

All reasons I’m happy to do my own work unless it’s something I can’t handle without specialized tools or a lift.

OP I hope you get some resolution on this but the outcome is usually not what it should be. Best of luck and please update on final disposition. :fingerscrossed:

IF I paid someone to do an oil & filter change I would check the work and ensure the engine has oil to a proper level before leaving the garage.

I used the 24 months of "free" oil changes when I bought my truck. They were always offended when I checked the oil and verified the filter was replaced before leaving...

I changed my oil yesterday and after reading this thread, I checked the oil again today.
Sorry about the blown engine. Never a good thing.

Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
Pull the filter and cut it open. Is it wet? If not, no oil went in. I would believe that the 4.0 would run for 1000 miles on residual after knowing a guy who ran one to 46,000 miles on the factory fill before no worky no more. (old guy and dementia was setting in)

Post quickie lube oil change failures are common. A honda dealership tech told me they get at least 3 per month. Oil filter or drain plug fell off or they forgot to put in oil.

It doesn’t sound like the oil level was checked after they did it. No disrespect intended here. Is it possible the dash light came on and wasn’t noticed? That light is working?

I was thinking the same but assumed the owner would have noticed the oil light being on immediately. But, perhaps that sensor or light isn't working.

OP already stated that the oil light did not turn on. So clearly he's not one of those guys.

actually it does… quite a lot when a new motor installed probably costs 1/2 the value of the truck

OP already knows the new motor is needed, sounds like sorting that part has already started, however having valid concerns & talking points/substantial evidence is the only shot at getting JL to own up to the mistakes and recoup costs in this ridiculous situation…

If it were you, would you fight the fight or just bend over & open your wallet?

I work for the court system,so I think I know more about law then most,it's hearsay when she said the truck sat for 11 days, JL is not going too pay for anything, and any court will not help after she had the truck for 11 plus days before the failure, just saying.
I feel for her but facts are facts.

If it's her truck and she knows exactly where it was, how does that qualify as hear say? JL may try to refute that by trying to make her substantiated her statement.

If she has witnesses that can attest to her statement, she might prevail.

JL undoubtedly has counsel that has a lot of experience defending against claims for their shoddy work, so it's likely they know how to proceed.

OTOH, she works for a lawfirm so it may not cost her much to pursue her claim.

We might never know as all too often first time posters with problems disappear never to return.
