engine shut off while driving

    hey guys. just picked up an 95.5 reg cab, 2.7, 5 speed with 165k in great condition. what a great forum this is, soooo much info available. anyways last week while driving the engine cuts out on me and the check engine lite comes on. i coast to a stop and try to start it and it fires right up and has been running fine ever since but the check eng lite still on. any ideas on what to check for???????
    not obd2 so no autozone for free scan

    Sounds fuel related, try changing your filter possibly.

    It could be your fuel pump..

    BUT do the easy first.. change your spark plugs, spark plug wire, cap, rotor, fuel filter and Get your timing checked.. If you still have your problem then i would change your fuel pump.

    i agree with mrp execpt im sure if timing were off you would aquire the problem for frequently. also check all your ground straps. i have seen some funny stuff over the years! im also a first time taco owner but grounds are very important as i have learned and im an mechanic. so do yourself a favor and do an extended tune up as mrp had said! this is almost always the first step unless u have obd2 which will shoot u in a closer position.
