Don't some of the MT guys have trouble getting in to 4lo because the clutch isn't fully depressed?
    Same kind of interlock happening?

That is a problem, just like 4Lo is odd for everyone until they figure out what works, but that shouldn't kill the motor in Neutral while moving.

Vehicles have not always had these luxuries. Driving used to be far more athletic with manual everything. Of course to overcome these issues they had larger diameter steering wheels and high leverage brake pedals.

We call those the good days.

Always amazes me what motorcycles can still do with human leverage.

VW bugs are in a class all by themselves.... pedals that pivot on the floor and that funny 2 speed semi auto that the had as an option. One thing I learned about German cars, unbelievable engineering but had no clue how to wire!

I never cared for the Auto-Stick versions.

    Sounds like idle issues.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Can confirm. I'm 100% Polish (straight from the motherland) and my Dad used to do it all the time in his '88 Comanche down a long hill. Can't say I understood it then or do now. Even used to turn into streets under gravity power. That 4.0 probably took more fuel to start than to idle/run for the 25sec it took to coast with engine on.

Neither did anyone else except for that one guy, they were absolute garbage as were most VW/Audi auto's until much later.

The electric boosters work even with the key out of the ignition.

Sometimes i need to roll my truck forward in my driveway and I'll just hop in and release the e brake and push the clutch in.

After a moment the pedal activates and will stop you.

Obviously if you try to steer the wheel will lock and you can't turn

    Perfect. Thanks!

Yeah, with the slight turn into our garage, I'm usually on Accessory to do that.

    Coasting down grade
When travelling down grade a driver must not coast with the gears of the vehicle in neutral or the clutch disengaged.

Here are a number of reasons that I found which would indicate that this is a bad idea:

    • engine braking is eliminated
    • vehicle speed downhill will increase quickly
    • increased use of the footbrake can reduce its effectiveness
    • steering response will be affected particularly on bends and corners
    • it may be more difficult to select the appropriate gear when needed.
