2009 2.7 rwd manual, most of the time I start it after its been sitting for a few hours, it'll start for a second, then stall, then it starts perfectly fine on the second start.

I'm just wondering what the issue that's causing this to happen could be, I used a cheap OBS scanner and the only thing it pulled up was ABS #2 was not getting enough voltage, which I can't imagine is at all connected to an engine stall.

    Thanks,

    BlackZeppelin

There's also been a time or two where it's kept turning over and only started when I gave it a bit of gas, but idk if that was connected to the nearly dead battery or not; obviously I'm not someone who's very mechanically inclined aha

Mine does the same every once and a while. Haven’t ever worried about it. It’s done it since new and has 125,000 on it now.

could be a check valve in the fuel pump not holding pressure. Nothing to worry about if its that other than a second crank.

My 14 v6 has done that from time to time since it was new too (stumble/stall on the first crank, 2nd crank starts right up), never has gotten any worse so I'm not concerned.

Mine has done this a few times over the passed 12+ years I’ve owned it. But it might only happen 1 or 2 times a year.

Starts up for about 1 second and shuts clean off.

If you’re experiencing this on a weekly basis, I’d say you have a problem.

My thought too. Easy way to check is to turn the key to on momentarily to allow the pump to prime, turn to off, then start it. If the problem goes away this could be the problem.

Did this happen anytime you disconnected the battery or changed it out for a new one? I know all Toyotas do this when ever you do that. It is the reason I mentioned to check the battery since OP has a low voltage code.

Our trucks don't have a key on prime, the pump only runs when the PCM sees a start or engine speed signal.

Toyota has used the “No Prime” system since at least the 1st Gen 3.4 engine.
And AFAIK, they still haven’t made it easy to check pressure. You have to have a special Banjo adapter for the 1st Gen and a T adapter for the 2nd Gen.

I always turn the truck to the on position then wait a second for the relay to click. It sounds like the relay is on the right side of the dash. If I do this before I start the truck I never have a problem, so I believe the issue involves the security key and not the ignition system.
My 2008 4cyl did not have security keys and I never had a problem starting immediately.

I’ve never heard a relay click in mine.
I’ve heard the Shift Lock click.

But that could be because of years of not wearing hearing protection while running mowers, saws and trimmers.

    Maybe that’s what I’m hearing.

Maybe? The easiest way for me to tell the security system is off, is by looking at the light. But I have to be honest, I never really look at it. I just get in, crank it, and go.

I am like most people. I don’t notice things until there’s a problem. :anonymous:

The only relays I hear click on mine are the 4wd ECU running it's self test and then the hydraulic brake booster running it's self test when it hits 5 mph.

Mine does this every time I disconnect the battery. It’s the ECU resetting or something. Not sure what would cause this if the batt wasn’t disconnected.

Thanks for the correction. My other cars do so I made an assumption - and it was a bad one.
